The Emergence of the Daedong River View and the Han River View
Unraveling North Korea’s perception of diplomacy with Russia
Finding Symptoms of (Under)Privileged Urban Nature in a Socialist City
North Korean media refer to Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea, as a “city in a park,” and urban researchers explore the potential for Pyongyang to become a sustainable city. Given North Korean media’s function as a propaganda organization supporting the Kim Jong-un regime and consistently producing positive content about the regime, we can employ alternative and more objective methods to assess Pyongyang’s sustainability. This article seeks t…
The Emergence of North Korean-style Desakota Regions in the Kim Jong-un Era? Extracting Urbanrural Dichotomy from North Korean Urban Studies
Urban commons and the state
Recently, urban theorists and activists have led debates on the urban commons in Korea. This study sheds new light on the possibilities and contradictions of the state’s role in constructing urban commons in non-Western contexts, specifically amid Korean developmental urbanisation. Alternatively, I employ the concept of the ‘more-than-local state’ as a way of approaching not only the local state per se but also its inter-scalar interactions with …
The production of a geopolitical imaginary in the East Asian Cold War
Like other islands of the Cold War frontier in East Asia, such as Okinawa, Jinmen, and Matsu, the Five West Sea Islands (FWI) of South Korea have been a highly contested frontier of both domestic and inter‐Korean politics. This study views the FWI as a geopolitical imaginary that was constructed during the Cold War and has been sustained throughout the post‐Cold War era. Specifically, we focus on how the South Korean government has constructed th…
Theorizing the More-Than-Human State
This article seeks to explore the possibilities of theorizing the more-than-human state (MTHS), by paying attention to the agentive and affective power of nonhumans as social forces—qualities that are usually believed to belong only to humans—in constructing the state’s form and strategies. For this task, I attempt to contribute to a self-reflexive debate on the strategic-relational approach (SRA), one of the key theoretical resources for researc…
The future is how
In Maarten Hajer and his colleagues' insightful papers (Hajer & Pelzer, 2018, Energy Research and Social Science, 44, 222; Hajer & Versteeg, 2019, Territory, Politics, Governance, 7, 122) and the following sharp commentaries, we confirmed that critical scholars in the field of urban studies and energy research recognise that "the future is now" for imagining post-fossil cities and dismantling the current unsustainable energy regime gobbling up fo…

Multi‐Scalar Practices of the Korean State in Global Climate Politics
The paper examines the significance of state territoriality and the related multi‐scalar practices of the state in the light of the symptoms of post‐politics exemplified in global environmental governance. The focus rests on the South Korean government's Green Growth (GG) strategy and the efforts to export this strategy as a role model to emerging economies worldwide through the establishment of the Global Green Growth Institute. We begin with th…
Changing South Korean Water Policy after Political and Economic Liberalisation
This study explores the way in which South Korean water policy has been dynamically (re-)constructed by continuing political contestations among diverse social forces acting in and through the state in the face of political and economic liberalisation. The path-dependency of the state-driven water resource policy under the former authoritarian regime did not disappear even after the democratisation. It was difficult to transform the old authorita…
A study of state-nature relations in a developmental state
Along with the literature on the 'social construction of nature', some scholars have recently emphasized the role of the state in the construction of nature by arguing that among various social forces and actors, the state plays a key role in making the discursive and material construction of nature. Based on this argument, and by focusing on the water resource policy of the Park Jung-Hee regime in South Korea (1961-79), this paper aims to explor…
