Racial Equity and Opportunity Gaps
This paper explores what educators articulated and perceived about their knowledge, beliefs, and mindsets (KBMs) to engage in racial equity practices aimed at closing opportunity gaps in their schools. Our research team utilized cognitive interviews (Drennan in J Adv Nurs 42:57–63, 2003) to gain insight into the educators’ KBMs about racial equity in their roles as teachers, school leaders, and aspiring school leaders. From Desegregation to Privatization
School choice policies and the movement to privatize education have become the currently preferred school reform methods on both the state and federal levels under the guise they will provide equal educational opportunities and access for all students. The 1954 school desegregation decision in Brown v. Board of Education arguably paved the way for equal educational opportunities, including school choice; however, we contend that the present-day s…
Deregulation and the American Education Marketplace
The deregulation movement has impacted the social, political, and economic landscape in the United States and continues to do so. In this article, we briefly summarize the general history of deregulation in this country and the meaning of deregulation within the specific context of education policy and reform. We focus on deregulation efforts designed to provide families and students with greater choice in where and how their K–12 schooling occur…
Growing C-D-R (Cedar)
In this article we extend Bell’s work on interest convergence by using Harris’ work on whiteness as property to articulate a cycle of interest convergence, interest divergence, and imperialistic reclamation, or convergence-divergence-reclamation (C-D-R, pronounced ‘cedar’). We then apply the C-D-R cycle lens to the evolution of federal race-conscious affirmative action legal cases in higher education and state anti-affirmative action policies tha…
Segregation 2.0
Students are more racially segregated in schools today than they were in the late 1960s and prior to the enforcement of court-ordered desegregation in school districts across the country. This special issue addresses the overarching theme of policies, practices, or roles and responsibilities of various stakeholders that may directly or indirectly contribute to this new generation of school segregation commonly known as resegregation. I begin this…
