The Problem of Force in Galileo’s Physics
Effects of Disease Threat and Attitude Similarity on Willingness to Help: The Mediating Role of Disgust
The current research tested the hypothesis that an increase in perceived disease vulnerability would create more feelings of disgust and a reduced willingness to help persons with dissimilar attitudes. To test these hypotheses, two studies were performed. In the first study, 173 university undergraduates indicated their willingness to help a target person who held similar or dissimilar attitudes. Then the participants' feelings of disgust about h…
Measuring the Perceived Social Intelligence of Robots
Robotic social intelligence is increasingly important. However, measures of human social intelligence omit basic skills, and robot-specific scales do not focus on social intelligence. We combined human robot interaction concepts of beliefs, desires, and intentions with psychology concepts of behaviors, cognitions, and emotions to create 20 Perceived Social Intelligence (PSI) Scales to comprehensively measure perceptions of robots with a wide rang…
The Influence of Implicit Math Anxiety on Math Achievement
Previous work has noted that math anxiety may have a profound effect on math performance; however extant research has relied on measures that explicitly assess math anxiety. This study examined the effects of implicit math anxiety on the performance of a math achievement task. We hypothesized that combined measure of implicit anxiety and explicit anxiety would better predict math achievement than measures of explicit math anxiety alone. In additi…
Effects of Self-Esteem Threat on Physical Attractiveness Stereotypes
Certainly one of the first things that we notice when meeting someone new is how physically attractive that they are. Although the vast majority of studies in the literature suggest favoritism for physically attractive humans, some research indicates that negative biases may occur as well. This discrepancy in the literature may simply indicate the failure of differing experimental methods to adequately tap the same construct; however, it is also …
The Influence of Physical Attractiveness on Belief in a Just World
Previous work has consistently found that belief in a just world is strongly correlated with societal privilege. In the present study, we examined the influence of physical attractiveness on belief in a just world. We hypothesized that physically attractive individuals would be stronger endorsers of belief in a just world, whereas less attractive individuals would be less likely to endorse belief in a just world. Both self-rated attractiveness (e…
Effects of Instructor Attractiveness on Learning
Although a considerable body of research has examined the impact of student attractiveness on instructors, little attention has been given to the influence of instructor attractiveness on students. This study tested the hypothesis that persons would perform significantly better on a learning task when they perceived their instructor to be high in physical attractiveness. To test the hypothesis, participants listened to an audio lecture while view…
The Life of Isaac Newton
Isaac Newton was indisputably one of the greatest scientists in history. His achievements in mathematics and physics marked the culmination of the movement that brought modern science into being. Richard Westfall's biography captures in engaging detail both his private life and scientific career, presenting a complex picture of Newton the man, and as scientist, philosopher, theologian, alchemist, public figure, President of the Royal Society, and…

Floods along the Bisenzio: Science and Technology in the Age of Galileo
In the spring of 1631, Pasquino di Lorenzo di Corso, a landholder on the plain along the Bisenzio River west of Florence, eighty-six years of age, unable to write but blessed with a friend who could, testified that he had never seen in this area the water and floods that came during the past year. . . .' There had been heavy rains early in September with general flooding.2 As it turned out, September was only the beginning; more rain inundated th…

Never at Rest: A Biography of Isaac Newton
This richly detailed 1981 biography captures both the personal life and the scientific career of Isaac Newton, presenting a fully rounded picture of Newton the man, the scientist, the philosopher, the theologian, and the public figure. Professor Westfall treats all aspects of Newton's career, but his account centres on a full description of Newton's achievements in science. Thus the core of the work describes the development of the calculus, the …
Marxism and the History of Science
The Foundations of Newton's Philosophy of Nature
Taking Isaac Newton at his own word, historians have long agreed that the decade of the 1660s, when Newton was a young man in his twenties, was the critical period in his scientific career. In the years 1665 and 1666, he has told us, he hit on the ideas of cosmic gravitation, the composition of white light, and the fluxional calculus. The elaboration of these basic ideas constituted his scientific achievement. Nevertheless, the decade of the 1660…
Hooke and the Law of Universal Gravitation: A Reappraisal af a Reappraisal
From the very day in 1686 when Edmond Halley placed Book I of the Principia before the Royal Society, Robert Hooke's claim to prior discovery has been associated with the law of universal gravitation. If the seventeenth century rejected Hooke's claim summarily, historians of science have not forgotten it, and a steady stream of articles continues the discussion. In our own day particularly, when some of the glitter has worn off, not from the scie…

Short-writing and the state of Newton’s Conscience, 1662
In the middle of 1662 Isaac Newton schooled himself in a system of short- writing. In the middle of 1662 he went through a period of intense religious awareness. The two events were connected by more than chronological coincidence. Newton’s interest in shorthand was hardly unique as the number of systems devised and published in the seventeenth century suggests; indeed, the system he adopted, Thomas Shelton’s, went through more than twenty editio…
