Appreciating the Complexity of Local Gender-Based Violence Needs Assessments
Needs assessments can be a pragmatic method to shape interventions addressing gender-based violence. They are complex endeavors even—or especially—at the local level (e.g., rape crisis centers, domestic violence shelters). Focusing on the US context, we highlight examples of the ways needs assessments can support the gender-based violence movement, and key tensions and considerations within needs assessment practice. We explore decisions that pra…

Measuring Collectivism and Individualism in the Third Millennium
The aim in this study was to validate the Auckland Individualism-Collectivism Scale (AICS) across populations from 5 different countries and identify better ways to interpret the scores. Data were collected from New Zealand, Portugal, China, Italy, and Romania. The results indicate that the AICS is not only valid but also highly reliable (α > .70). Cluster analysis identified 4 clusters: low collectivism – high individualism; high collectivism – …
Stability and correlates of student evaluations of teaching at a Chinese university
This paper examines the stability and validity of a student evaluations of teaching (SET) instrument used by the administration at a university in the PR China. The SET scores for two semesters of courses taught by 435 teachers were collected. Total 388 teachers (170 males and 218 females) were also invited to fill out the 60‐item NEO Five‐Factor Inventory together with a demographic information questionnaire. The SET responses were found to have…
Can Student Ratings of Teaching be Predicted by Teaching Styles
The relationship between teaching styles and student ratings of teaching was examined at a Chinese university. 388 teachers (170 men, 218 women) were invited to fill out the 49-item Teaching Styles Inventory (Grigorenko & Sternberg, 1993). The inventory measures seven teaching styles: legislative, judicial, liberal, global, executive, conservative, and local. Scores from students' evaluations of teaching of courses for one semester were collected…
Testing Competing Factor Models Underlying the Private Self-Consciousness Scale With Hong Kong Chinese Adolescents
This study evaluated competing factor models underlying the Private Self-Consciousness scale (Fenigstein, Scheier, & Buss, 1975) with a large sample of Hong Kong Chinese adolescents. Reliability analysis and exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis did not lend empirical support to the three split-factor models proposed in previous research (Anderson, Bohon, & Berrigan, 1996; Burnkrant & Page, 1984; Martin & Debus, 1999). It was recommended t…
An Investigation Of Ethnic Differences In The Motivation And Strategies For Learning Of Students In Desegregated South African Schools
No significant ethnic group differences were found in the academic motivation or learning strategies of more than 200 White and 200 Black South African students from two recently integrated secondary schools. Both groups considered working hard and having interest in school tasks to be more important than competition or affiliation. The former items tended to be the best predictors in both groups of the use of deep learning strategies, which are …
Confirmatory Factor Analysis of the Revised Causal Dimension Scale
The Causal Dimension Scale-II is conceptually important for research on attributions as it taps directly the subjects' own views of the dimensions underlying their causal ascriptions. However, this research based on the responses of 120 Nepalese tertiary students to the Causal Dimension Scale-II for both success and failure outcomes indicates that the internal consistency reliability of the External Control scale is of doubtful adequacy and that …
Self-monitoring as a mediator of person-environment fit
The research literature indicates that students tend to achieve better in a learning environment close to their preference. It was hypothesised that the congruence between the preferred and actual classroom environments would have an effect on students' learning and the impact would be more salient among low rather than high self-monitoring individuals since the latter can more easily adapt themselves to situations. This hypothesis was supported …
The revised Causal Dimension Scale
The Causal Dimension Scale II (CDS II) is a conceptually important instrument for attribution research as it taps directly the subjects' own views of the dimensions underlying their causal ascriptions. However, this research based on the responses of 167 Hong Kong tertiary students to the CDS II indicates that the internal consistency reliability of the External Control scale is of doubtful adequacy and that the best fitting model combines the Lo…
The Similarities Subtest of the British Ability Scales
The study investigated the content and construct validity of the British Ability Scales Similarities Test for Black and White Zimbabwe primary school children. Drawn from the two cultural groups, 200 children took part in the study. The test seemed to be free of construct and content bias for both cultural groups. Implications for test applications in a multicultural context are discussed and suggestions for further research given
Significant Others of Rural and Urban Nepalese Children
The significant others of 641 Nepalese secondary school children are reported according to gender and school grade level and location (rural or urban). Unlike findings from other cultures ‘father’ was of similar salience to ‘mother’, and ‘teacher’ was of importance to about half the sample. These trends were stronger in the rural areas where traditional Hindu values are strongest
Student Ratings of Tertiary Courses for ‘Alternative Calendar’ Purposes
Surveys of student opinion of tertiary courses often constitute a major source of information for prospective students. Yet the reliability and validity of such surveys have not previously been investigated. In this paper, data from a survey of some 20,000 individual ratings of 224 undergraduate courses were analysed. The purpose was to explore the relationship between students’ ratings and the characteristics of their courses. It was found that …

Class Size and Student Ratings of Tertiary Courses
Data from student ratings of 224 under-graduate courses at a New Zealand university were utilised to explore the relationship between size of class and student satisfaction with their course. Evidence was found for a larger negative association than is typically found in North American studies. However, there was little indication to suggest that this relationship was non-linear in form
Preferred Classroom Environment and Approach to Learning
S ummary . This study involved the administration of preferred classroom environment and approaches to learning measures to 1266 Australian high school students. Canonical analysis indicated a relationship between those learning strategies which are likely to lead to high quality learning outcomes and student preference for classrooms to be enjoyable and oriented to independent study and competition

Assessing causal dimensions
The purpose of this research was to evaluate a new measuring instrument, the Causal Dimension Scale (CDS). Eighty-nine New Zealand university students were asked to state in their own words the cause(s) of their previous year's tertiary grades and then to complete the CDS which sought their perceptions of the underlying cause(s) in terms of Weiner's (1979) dimensions: namely, locus of causality, stability, and controllability. It was found that t…
Sex Differences among Correlates of Extraversion and Neuroticism
The responses of 235 psychology students at the University of Melbourne to the Neuroticism and Extraversion scales of the Eysenck and Heron personality inventories were correlated with their ratings of importance and self-ratings of various areas of their lives. The results indicated that there may be significant differences in the self-perceptions of males and females with similar scores on the Neuroticism and Extraversion scales
