The Qu’ran as a Gospel for Christians
In the joint declaration of Abu Dhabi, Pope Francis and Grand Imam Ahmad Mohammed Al-Tayyeb spoke together in the name of God. In view of the outstanding significance of the name of God and the permanent relevance that Islam has gained in human history, the article demonstrates that the Qu’ran also holds meaning in terms of salvation history for Christianity and can therefore be regarded as good news, i.e. gospel, for Christians. As a consequence…
Bible and Philosophy
The present volume ‘Bible and Philosophy’ subjects various biblical texts and motifs, including the fall of man, Noah’s ark, Jacob’s ladder, the Song of Songs, the resurrection of Jesus, the problem of human and divine violence, the singularity and recognisability of God and the Christian understanding of baptism to philosophical reflection. It is based on an understanding of philosophy that does not renounce the question of truth, but does not r…
Encounters with the Absolute – The Absolute as Encounter
This article explores the contingency of the encounter between Jesus of Nazareth as representative of YHWH and Mary Magdalene that occurs at Jesus’s tomb. It interprets two important passages from the Gospel of Mark (Mk 16:1–8) and the Gospel of John (Jn 20:11–18) in order to reflect upon the Absolute which arises from this encounter. In Mark’s Gospel, the result of the encounter is the reference to a never-derivable and unrepresentable beginning…
In Praise of Mortality
Finite in the Time of Images". The essay examines the reflections of the French philosopher and psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan and his diagnosis of a collapse of our symbolic orders, manifested as language, art, religion, and ethics and resulting in the loss of the father and paternal speech. The search for a new expression that is "anarchic", i.e., one that is capable of renouncing the pre-modern repression of singularity, but also resisting postmo…
The Self-Evidence of Illusion
The question of verity in our day’s discourses within society, culture and religion challenges philosophy in the face of fake news, manipulations and the virtual. This paper addresses, via an exploration of the later philosophy of F.W.J. Schelling and the Gospel of Mark, whether the illusionary of history ought to be recognised as a form of truth. In his “Positive Philosophy”, Schelling claims that history is characterised by a loss of meaning th…
La conversione come evento assoluto
The Borders of Borders
This article examines the significance of public space for the European project and reflects on the contribution of Christianity to the shaping of today’s public space. It is characterized by a common and shared symbolic, social, cultural, economic, political and geographical sphere that is potentially accessible and open to all people and welcomes creative participation. Today the specific task of Christianity consists not at least in the concre…
Critiques of Master-Representations
Political theology is at the service of the critique of power representations. On the basis of the examination of Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit this paper supports the idea that religion can be considered a rupture in the projectionof the subject!s claim to power. This becomes especially apparent in the biblical canon and its core, the name of God YHWH and its New Testament equivalent, the Cross. In the final section the paper presents the idea …
