‘To Bring Them into Dialog’: A Conversation about Life Narrative and the Digital
This conversation, which originally formed part of the two-day workshop-and-conference “Life Narrative and the Digital 2023” at the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna, brings together historians, literary and auto/biography scholars, and digital humanists to address the intersections of life-narrative scholarship and digital humanities. They offer different disciplinary perspectives on the possibilities and challenges posed by the increasing …
Castles in the Air [Luftschlösser]: Thinking Climate Engineering with Franz Kafka and T.C. Boyle [Mit Franz Kafka und T.C. Boyle Klimaengineering denken]
In the context of proposed large-scale technological fixes for climate breakdown, unwanted symptoms and unintended effects of the digital revolution may be perceived as salutary. Reading through the lens of a critical philosophy of technology such as that of Ivan Illich, we can become more clearly aware of the propensity of Big Data and Big Planetary Tech to envelop life. These planetary-level megatechnological infrastructures are ‘radical monopo…

Refuge and the Wilded Classroom: Figure, Practice, Space
University teaching in a context of escalating planetary crisis requires new approaches to pedagogical encounter. Reconceptualising the university classroom as a potential refuge from polycrisis, we identify symptoms and effects of the academic‐industrial complex and ‘fast academia’ in our practice, and we develop ways to take refuge from these effects so as to resist or undo them. These paths of resistance include: conscious deceleration and wil…
The ‘I’ of Shame and Rage: Confession and Rumination at Either End of a Millennium
This article brings together two texts that differ in numerous respects: the long poem farbe komma dunkel by Levin Westermann (2021) and a devotional text often known as the Bamberg Creed and Confession ( Bamberger Glaube und Beichte ), transmitted in a twelfth‐century manuscript. Proceeding from a parallel reading, the article consists of a series of ruminations on a prominent grammatical feature shared by the poem and the confession — the I — a…
Imagining Gender in Biographical Fiction

Refusing the Child: Weininger, Edelman, Kertész
If human reproduction is a realm of future-making practice, its refusal or absence effects a reconceptualization of the future. The article examines three very different refusals of the child: the idealist antinatalism of Otto Weininger's Sex and Character (1903), the queer refusal of reproductive futurism in Lee Edelman's No Future (2004), and the negation of the thinkability of fatherhood through the trauma of Auschwitz in Imre Kertész's Kaddis…
Negating the family: Ritual and Dionysus in modernist utopia
Formations such as gangs stand in a complex relationship to other, more conventional or socially normative groupings and collectives, such as the family. This article probes the gang's function as a kind of alternative family and as a lens through which to view the relationship between family and non-family groupings. The tension between family and non-family is examined at the intersection between utopian order and Dionysian disorder as the gang…
Towards an Antibiographical Archive: Mediations Between Life Writing and Metabiography
Biography mediates between bios and graphein; it maps the work of culture onto the living body and enfolds the living body into the work of culture. The biographical promise is twofold: to construct a narrative out of the life traces of a dead or otherwise absent subject, and thus to stage a three-way encounter in which the biographer mediates between reader and subject. The fundamental premises of this endeavour have been called into question by…
Ein neues, mächtiges Volkstum’: Eugenic Discourse and its Impact on the Work of Gerhart Hauptmann
This essay compares the negative portrayal of dogmatic eugenicism in Gerhart Hauptmann's early play Vor Sonnenaufgang (1889) with ways in which the eugenics question was articulated in Hauptmann's later works, specifically the novels Atlantis (1912) and Die Insel der großen Mutter (1924). The differences between early and later iterations of this theme in Hauptmann's work are contextualised with reference to the increasing popularity of eugenics …
