  • Youth Political Engagement and Democratic Culture in Republican Nepal

    Open Access•Tom O''Neill, Tom O'Neill et al.•ARTICLE•HIMALAYA•2020

Nepal's transformation from an autocratic monarchy to a democratic republic presupposes the development of democratic institutions, and the current generation of Nepali youth, particularly those in higher education, are uniquely situated in that process. As such Nepali youth constitute a distinct generation along the lines specified by Karl Mannheim and others. In the past efforts to mobilize Nepalese youth have been aimed at integrating them as …

  • Why the Center Can't Hold

    Tom O’neill, Tom O''Neill et al.•BOOK•Why the Center Can't Hold•2016

Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold." These words from Yeats's poem "The Second Coming" provide Why the Center Can't Hold with its organizing theme. And although Yeats was describing the grim atmosphere of post-World War I Europe, O'Neill regards the poem's pronouncements as eerily predictive of the state of the world as we are currently observing it. O'Neill takes them as predictive of the agency in particular of the United States--the "Ce…

  • Our Nepali Work is Very Good”

    Open Access•Tom O'Neill, Thomas A O’Neill•ARTICLE•Asian and Pacific migration journal•2007•Cited by: 2•References: 15

This paper explores the experiences of several young Nepali women who spent time in the Persian Gulf as transnational domestic workers, and argues that migration served to increase their sense of autonomy and agency. In it, I question the conflation of transnational domestic work with the trafficking of prostitutes into India, which figured in governmental protective measures until 2003, or during the time when these young women worked abroad. Th…

    Open Access•Tom O''Neill, Tom O'Neill et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologica•2001•Cited by: 4

The pace of economic globalization is accelerating, ironically, at a time when the movement of human capital is becoming more restricted. As the potential for legal migration is denied by states to would-be migrants, illegal networks form that place them at greater risk of exploitation. This paper examines a scheme by which Nepalese girls were trafficked to Kuwait to work as domestic workers, and how this was con structed as their immoral objecti…

  • Montale's Fishy Petrarchism

    Tom O'Neill•ARTICLE•Modern Language Notes•1991•Cited by: 1

If the allusiveness of Montale's mature poetry, that of Le occasioni and La bufera e altro in particular, which is also the allusiveness of its language, was intended to protect the intrinsically private nature of the love experience which lay behind it, it was intended no less, perhaps paradoxically, thereby to heighten and to highlight its richness, which is also the richness of its language. In terms of like and unlike, of diffrrance, in a wor…
