  • Thomas Piketty. Capital in the Twenty-First Century

    Mary O’sullivan, Mary O'Sullivan•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2015

It is difficult to think of a recent book by a social scientist, and impossible to think of one by an economist, that is of as much potential interest to historians as Thomas Piketty's Capital in the Twenty-First Century. Its central question is an inherently historical one about the relationship between capital accumulation and inequality in the very long run. And the theory that Piketty proposes by way of an answer—that rising inequality is inh…

  • A Fine Failure

    Open Access•Mary O’sullivan, Mary O'Sullivan•ARTICLE•The Business History Review•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 24

In this study of lending in the emergence of a modern steel industry in the United States, I analyze the evolving interaction between borrowers and lenders in historical context. I show how “relationship lending” (that is, credit allocation in which personal contacts play a major role) can go wrong, despite good intentions at the outset, and that institutional conditions exert an important influence on how lenders and borrowers negotiate conflict…

Mary O’sullivan, Mary O'Sullivan•CHAPTER•The Oxford handbook of innovation•2009

Innovation is an expensive process; significant resources must be expended to initiate, direct, and sustain it. It is a process that takes time which means that the resources that support it must be committed until the process is complete. According to this article, contemporary economists of innovation have largely neglected the relationship between finance and innovation. This article notes that empirical research has not kept pace with theoret…

    Open Access•Mary O’sullivan, Mary O'Sullivan•ARTICLE•Enterprise & Society•2007•Cited by: 11•References: 12

Based on an analysis of the leading trading markets for stock in the United States, I document the dramatic expansion that took place in the scale and scope of the country's stock market from the mid-1880s to the early 1930s. My analysis suggests that a broadbased stock market was a long way from being established even by the early teens. It took the impetus provided by World War I, plus the enthusiasm of the 1920s, to bring such a market into ex…
