Corpus linguistics and AI in the reconfiguration of language learning ecologies
This talk examines how corpus linguistics and artificial intelligence treasure the potential to reshape contemporary language learning ecologies. It argues that the rapid normalisation of generative AI has intensified the need for pedagogical models that combine low-friction access to language support with transparent methods grounded in attested usage. Drawing on ecological perspectives and recent empirical research, the talk shows how AI-driven…
The role of statistical learning in the L2 acquisition and use of nonadjacent predicate-argument constructions
While statistical learning of adjacent constructions is well-documented in SLA, our knowledge of this cognitive mechanism concerning nonadjacent constructions remains limited. To address this, we investigated the acquisition of Mandarin predicate-argument constructions containing the preposition duì. Specifically, via a corpus-based approach, we probed whether learners’ core predicate use within these nonadjacent constructions mirrors the pattern…
Pedagogic natural language processing resources for L2 education
Pedagogic natural language processing resources (P-NLPRs) are a group of online technologies that aid teaching practices and hold the potential to enable Data-Driven Learning approaches by providing teachers and students with linguistic information. This study explores the perspectives of L2 educators on the potential implementation of P-NLPRs in their teaching practices. A training module was designed to provide information on the potential appl…

Stance nouns in Covid-19 related blog posts
Research dissemination through academic blogs creates opportunities for writers to reach wider audiences. With COVID-19, public dissemination of research impacts daily practices, and national and international policies, and in countries like the UK and Spain, The Conversation publishes accessible COVID-19 themed research. Such academic blogs are important to the global academy, yet the role of authorial stance therein is notably under-investigate…
Noun phrase complexity in young Spanish EFL learners’ writing
The research reported in this article examines Noun Phrase (NP) syntactic complexity in the writing of Spanish EFL secondary school learners in Grades 7, 8, 11 and 12 in the International Corpus of Crosslinguistic Interlanguage. Two methods were combined: a manual parsing of NPs and an automatic analysis of NP indices using the Tool for the Automatic Analysis of Syntactic Sophistication and Complexity ( TAASSC ). Our results revealed that it is i…

Constructing immigrants in UK legislation and Administration informative texts
Research has shown that immigrants tend to be negatively constructed in the discourse of the media. In the context of the European Union (EU), British newspapers reportedly offer largely negative or partial constructions of these individuals. These representations contribute to jeopardizing the integration of this group of people, as their social construction reflects and influences the attitudes of EU citizens and the immigration policies. Our r…
Adverb use and language proficiency in young learners’ writing
Our research examines the use of general adverbs by learners across grades 5, 6, 9 and 10 in the International Corpus of Crosslinguistic Interlanguage (ICCI) by looking at whether this use increases with age. For our research we use data from the Polish, Spanish and Chinese components in the ICCI, in particular, those from the “food” and “money” topics. Our results show that general adverbs are more widely used as age increases. Statistically sig…
Learners’ search patterns during corpus-based focus-on-form activities
Our research explores the search behaviour of EFL learners (n=24) by tracking their interaction with corpus-based materials during focus-on-form activities ( Observe , Search the corpus , Rewriting ). One set of learners made no use of web services other than the BNC during the central Search the corpus activity while the other set resorted to other web services and/or consultation guidelines. The performance of the second group was higher, the l…

Integrating English for Specific Academic Purposes (Esap) skills into mainstream English courses
This paper examines the design and implementation stages of a course of English given at the Faculty of Psychology of the University of Murcia, Spain. The course was programmed regardless of the particular individuals and no previous requirements were needed. Two initial tests were passed to the students at the beginning of the semester: the first one to evaluate their needs and motivation and the second one to measure their general communicative…
