Introduction to the special issue: Action research in english language and communication contexts in higher education
Action Research and Language Teaching
Over the past three decades, action research (AR), which is part of a more general movement toward “teacher research,” has found a growing presence in language teaching accredited courses and in‐service professional development. AR is a flexible and dynamic approach to research, which usually has considerable appeal for educators, because of its localized and contextualized applications. In this brief overview, the main theoretical and developmen…

English primary teacher agency in implementing teaching methods in response to language policy reform: A Vietnamese case study
Teacher agency has become a growing research interest in language education, especially at the critical juncture of widespread globalisation, when many nations including Vietnam, the context of the study, have promulgated a new language policy to respond to this transformation. However, teacher agency remains under-examined despite a small number of recent studies. In response to the paucity in the current LP literature, this qualitative case stu…

Qualitative Teacher Research
The notion of teachers being active participants in research has a relatively long history in the field of general education. However, it is only since the late 1980s that it has received increasing attention and acceptance in the field of English language teaching. In this entry I discuss what is meant by teacher research and consider qualitative approaches typically used in teacher research. In particular I focus on action research, an approach…
Migration and Adult Language Learning: Global Flows and Local Transpositions
In the 21st century, global flows politically, socially, economically, and environmentally (Burbules & Torres, 2000; Singh Sc Doherty, 2004) are creating widespread movements of people around the world and giving rise to increased resettlements of immigrants and refugees internationally (Roberts 8c Baynham, 2006). The reality in most countries worldwide is that contemporary populations are multifaceted, multicultural, multiethnic, multiracial, an…

Policy Implications of the Diffusion and Control of Medical Technology
Medical technology has become a controversial national policy issue, largely because of rapidly rising national health expenditures and their relation to medical technology. These costs are increasingly viewed in relation to benefits or effectiveness. Attempts to control medical technology, to consider benefits in relation to costs, have largely been regulatory, and have failed to ameliorate cost rises. This failure has stimulated consideration o…
