When Fear Teaches
Engaging with emphases on the educational function of ecological awareness in children’s literature about forests, this article examines several contemporary Vietnamese works, asking how their portrayal of forests potentially provokes ecological teachings. Analyzing narratives of the complex fear children feel toward the forest in Vietnamese children’s literature, this article argues that the predominant fear is itself an ecological and environme…

South East Asia as a ground of comparison
The absence of South East Asian literatures in postcolonial comparative literature symptomatizes a central tension within the field: the persistence of imperial logics alongside efforts to decolonize them. This tension is evident in Southeast Asia, where comparative literature has depended on English translations and has developed through the importation of disciplinary frameworks. Moreover, the region's geography, linguistic diversity, differenc…

Political Orientation in Ecocriticism
Since the late 1990s, theories and practices of ecocriticism have tended to be more politically engaged than in its earliest phase, considering that “environmental problems cannot be solved without addressing issues of wealth and poverty, overconsumption, underdevelopment, and the notion of resource scarcity” (Heise 251-2). This paper engages with the political orientation in ecocriticism by examining presentations of humans and nature in three V…
Literature and Nation-Building in Vietnam
This book analyzes why Indians have been made invisible in Vietnamese society and historiography. It argues that their invisibilization originates in the formulaic metaphor Vietnamese nation-makers have used to portray Indians in their quest for national sovereignty and socialism. The book presents a complex view on colonial legacies in Vietnam which suggests that Vietnamese nation-makers associate Indians with colonialism and capitalism, ultimat…
Uncategorized Indians in Vietnam and questions for diaspora studies
This research report describes individual Indian descendants in Ho Chi Minh city in the aim of raising research questions for the scholarship of Indian diaspora studies. I focus on the Indian diasporic members who are largely descendants of those who, in the second half of the nineteenth century and before, migrated from French–British India to Vietnam. They are economically and culturally different from the current Indian expats, the members of …
Beyond the Indian Ocean Public Sphere
During the colonial period, particularly in the 1920s, Vietnamese intellectuals frequently debated Rabindranath Tagore’s Greater Indian, pan-Asian vision in their political exchanges. Drawing on scholarship on the rise of an Indian Ocean public sphere, this article analyzes periodicals covering Tagore in colonial Vietnam in order to explore alternative and less researched trajectories of contemporary Vietnamese nationalism. Specifically, it exami…
Nation building and religion in post-reform Vietnam
This paper examines the complex and dynamic dimensions of projects to nationalize the Mariamman Hindu temple in Ho Chi Minh City. It aims to show how the reform-era Vietnamese state has consistently used a range of bureaucratic and discursive techniques to construct narrative practices, architectural structures and personnel bodies to transform the Indian temple into part of ‘a socialist state’. These techniques include transnational negotiation …
