Building institutional practices to support engaged scholarship
I attended my first Aspen Conference on Engaged Scholarship in the summer of 2005. I was intrigued by the animating premise of the conference that academic research in organizational communication

Intervention orientations in communication research
The importance of intervention in communication research has continued to expand in a variety of research traditions including applied communication, engaged scholarship, and communication activism. The growing importance of intervention requires closely examining our research practices regarding knowledge production and the role of nonacademic research partners. The present study articulates four intervention orientations based on an analysis of…
Rethinking the design of communication theory pedagogy
The creation of innovative and impactful communication theories depends on improving our theorizing practices. A grounded practical theory analysis of communication theory textbooks and exercises explored representations of theorizing and what it means for students to think like theorists. The analysis suggests that communication theory pedagogy embraces a model of theorizing as practical application where existing theories and deductive reasonin…
Organizational Communication Design Logics
Theorizing communication as design can support the development of theories of intervention by focusing attention not just on how groups, organizations, and communities communicate, but also on how they make and try to enact choices about their communication. We posit a theory of organizational communication design logics aimed at clarifying how collectives intervene in their own communication. We argue that collective communication design (CCD) i…
Pivotal leadership and the art of conversation
Inspired by auto-ethnographic and self-study action research methods, I explore my experience becoming an interim head in an academic department following the death of my department head. I reflect on my experiences using the literature on department head leadership as well as theory and research I have developed regarding a systemic constructionist approach to leadership. My analysis suggests that our current thinking regarding department head a…
Discursive positioning and planned change in organizations
This study uses discursive positioning theory to explore how planned change messages influence organizational members’ identity and the way they experienced organizational change. Based on an in-depth case study of a home healthcare and hospice organization that engaged in a multiyear planned change process, our analysis suggests that workers experienced salient change messages as constituting unfavorable identities, which were associated with th…
Living Leadership
This article offers a practical theory of leadership grounded in systemic thinking and social constructionism. A systemic constructionist approach conceptualizes leadership as a co-created, performative, attributional, and contextual process where the ideas articulated in talk or action are recognized by others as progressing tasks that are important to them. Using a systemic constructionist framework, we argue that leadership theory and research…

Reflexivity and managerial practice
Within the postmodern and critical managerial communication and pedagogical literature, reflexivity has traditionally been conceptualized as an epistemological practice that emphasizes intellectual critique. Little attention has been given to how managers act reflexively in conversation with other organizational members. This study sampled managers who were trained from a communication perspective that emphasizes reflexive practice. The results s…
