Vom Röhren-Manager zum Verteidigungs-Staatssekretär und zurück
Ernst Wolf Mommsen (1910–1979) was one of the best-known steel managers of the old German Federal Republic. In 1970 he was recruited as an under-secretary of state by the Federal Ministry of Defence with responsibility for armaments and procurement and returned to industry in 1973 as Chairman of Friedrich Krupp GmbH. Based on extensive archival research, the article examines the background to this twofold switch through the «revolving door». The …

Der Wirtschaftshistorische Ausschuss des Vereins für Socialpolitik
The Economic History Committee of the Verein für Socialpolitik was founded 70 years ago as the first interest group for economic and social history in Germany. As did its five counterparts of other subfields in economics, the committee aimed at intensifying academic exchange in this field. Furthermore, it served as a lobby organisation for the discipline in the fast changing politics of higher education in Germany. It therefore can be considered …

The German Textile Puzzle
As in other countries, textile and apparel production in Germany is considered a victim of globalization. Domestic production and employment declined dramatically after its postwar peak in the late 1950s. Research has often attributed this trajectory to the trade liberalization policy of the German governments. However, this interpretation is puzzling. German trade policy was not as liberal as is claimed, nor did the industry disappear. This arti…

German University Professors’ salaries in the 20th Century. A Relative Income Approach
This article presents a new estimate for the income of German university professors in the 20th century, using university archives as its main source. With these figures we reject the decline-perspective that has been predominant in the literature, influenced especially by Fritz K. Ringer’s book. We compare the professors’ salaries to those in leading occupations in private business, as well as state bureaucracy and find that relative income leve…
Inequality, Well-Being and Happiness in Historical Perspective
Happiness research is a comparably new field of economics. Until Richard Easterlin’s seminal contribution published in 1974, most economists believed there to be a clear and positive correlation between the material standard of living and subjective well-being (or happiness). Economic happiness research has found that, although income matters, inequality, other economic and non-economic factors also play an important role in subjective well-being…
Ökonomischer Strukturwandel
The article suggests that the concepts of economic structure and structural change were historically strongly committed to Jean Fourastié’s idea of economic sectors. The obsession with Fourastié’s ideas fuelled many lasting errors in our understanding of long-term change in economic structures, and was largely at the expense of other concepts. The article aims to uncover the misleading interpretation of the Fourastié-approach and to survey altern…
Co-operatives in Germany in the 20th Century
