  • Women Veterans’ Perspectives on the Acceptability of Behavioral Health Treatment for Unhealthy Alcohol Use in Primary Care

    Open Access•Katherine A Buckheit, Madison K Firkey et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2026

OBJECTIVE: The gap in alcohol consumption among men and women is narrowing, yet rates of alcohol treatment engagement among women veterans remain low. When women do seek alcohol treatment, they tend to do so in non-alcohol-specific settings, such as primary care. Although incorporating patient preferences into treatment has been associated with better outcomes, little is known about women veteran's perspectives on the acceptability of primary car…

Open Access•Kyle Possemato, Kimberly Barrie et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Rural Health•2026

PURPOSE: Most rural Veterans with behavioral health concerns are not engaged in behavioral health care. Peer Support for Treatment Seeking (PS-TS) engages Veterans in care by leveraging Veteran peer specialists' unique skills to connect with other Veterans. PS-TS is a brief conversation about treatment-seeking beliefs that aims to connect Veterans to care. PS-TS was implemented in two rural Veterans Health Administration (VHA) regions in 2024. ME…

  • Identifying transdiagnostic and multidimensional prognostic indicators among veterans with PTSD symptoms in brief integrated care settings

Open Access•Shane W Adams, Kyle Possemato et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Trauma Theory…•2024

Findings indicated that veterans with moderate PTSD symptoms and physical health problems but low dysphoria may respond best to trauma-informed intervention in brief integrated care settings, while others may require further individualized stepped care. Findings demonstrate unique traumatic stress reactions that support individualized stepped care and may offer greater treatment utilization, retention, and efficacy. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) …

  • Headache Disorders in VHA Primary Care

Abigail E Ramon, Kyle Possemato et al.•ARTICLE•Behavioral Medicine•2023

Military veterans are at increased risk for headache disorders compared to the general population, yet the prevalence and burden associated with headache disorders among veterans is not yet well understood. In this electronic medical record study, we examined the prevalence of headache disorders among veterans seen in a northeastern network of Veterans Health Administration (VHA) primary care during 2017-2018. We also examined rates of psychiatri…

  • Primary Care Veteran Preferences for Receiving Information about Mental Health Services

Open Access•Brittany N Hampton, Emily Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Veterans Studies•2022

The purpose of this study was to understand contextual characteristics of how veterans in primary care prefer to receive mental healthcare information (i.e., information about mental health symptoms/services) in terms of provider, location, and format. One hundred sixteen primary care veterans with behavioral health concerns (58% depression, 37% PTSD, 50% hazardous alcohol use) participated in a cross-sectional phone and mail survey. Forty-seven …

Open Access•Dev Crasta, Cory A Crane et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

This study explores differences in characteristics and relationship treatment preferences across different levels of intimate partner violence (IPV) among Veterans Affairs (VA) primary care patients. In Fall 2019, we sent a mail-in survey assessing relationship healthcare needs to N = 299 Veterans randomly sampled from 20 northeastern VA primary care clinics (oversampling female and younger Veterans). We compared those reporting past year use or …

  • Reductions in Cortisol Associated With Primary Care Brief Mindfulness Program for Veterans With PTSD

    Dessa Bergen-Cico, Dessa Bergen‐Cico et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2014•References: 50

BACKGROUND: Patients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have significant medical morbidity, which may be mediated by hypothalamic pituitary axis (HPA) dysfunction and reflected in cortisol output. Many veterans with PTSD are hesitant to engage in trauma-focused exposure treatments; therefore briefer, non-exposure-based treatments are needed; one such promising approach is an abbreviated Primary Care brief Mindfulness Program (PCbMP). OBJEC…

  • Association Between Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Primary Care Provider-Diagnosed Disease Among Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans

Judith P Andersen, Judith Andersen et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2010

OBJECTIVE: To determine if a diagnosis of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) was associated with primary care provider-diagnosed physical disease in the first 5 years post deployment. METHODS: An examination of medical records of 4416 veterans of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom (OEF/OIF) was conducted. Participants were veterans who served between September 11, 2001 and December 31, 2007, without prior combat exposure, and who uti…
