From polemics to dialogue: Redrawing genre boundaries in eastern European philosophy during state socialism
This paper addresses the proliferation of “philosophical dialogues” as a genre in Eastern European state socialist philosophy. Focusing on Romania and Hungary, we contextualize this genre by referring to the increased preoccupation with dialogue manifested in the local philosophy after the 1960s, especially stressing the close contacts with Existentialism and its own production of philosophical dialogues. Subsequently, we look at the confluence b…
The antinomies of man and the detotalization of thinking: Escaping from Marxism towards Kant in Hungarian philosophy in the 1970–1980s
The present paper focuses on a case of a Marxist “return to Kant” which played an important role in shaping the philosophical landscape during the final two decades of state socialism in Hungary. We intend to explore the ideological underpinnings and interpretative opportunities that sparked the Marxist Kant renaissance from the early 1970s onward, and to showcase the ways it evolved into one of the most advanced segments of Hungarian philosophic…
The impact of ESG components on brand value
In recent years, environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues have emerged as a significant area of focus for companies. Furthermore, the international trend is reinforced by the emergence of relevant regulations and the obligation to prepare sustainability reports in leading economies and in the European Union. The impact of ESG and its constituent elements (environmental, social, and governance) on financial performance has been the subjec…
Történelemhasználat és társadalomkritika Foucault-nál
Foucault munkáit szokás a 20. század második felének legerőteljesebb társadalomkritikai ambíciójú filozófiai vállalkozásai közé sorolni. Mint ahogy szokás, ellentétes perspektívából, szisztematikusan számonkérni rajta a valódi normatív megalapozás hiányát. E tanulmány arra vállalkozik, hogy megpróbálja összebékíteni egymással e két egymást kizárni látszó szempontot. Igyekszem egyrészről bemutatni, hogy a jelen „diagnosztikus kritikája” Foucault-n…
The positive effects of green technology investments on growth expectations
This study presents evidence that investments in green technology and corporate environmental policies, or in other words, a move towards cleaner production, increase investors' growth expectations, resulting in a rise in firms' stock market value. Additionally, the study statistically demonstrates that the positive correlation between cleaner production and growth expectations strengthened during the latter half of the 2010s. The author employs …
Foucault's Critical Philosophy of History: Unfolding the Present
Foucault's Critical Philosophy of History: Unfolding the Present provides a comprehensive interpretation of Foucault's work by focusing on its methodological, procedural, and epistemological elements. Adam Takács argues that despite all its thematic and analytical diversity, Foucault's procedure can be understood within a unified framework based on the historical problematization of the present. This procedure, triggered by current social issues …
Unbalanced exposure: Existentialism, Marxism, and philosophical culture in state socialist Hungary
Existentialism and existentialist thinkers enjoyed sustained interest in Hungary under communist rule. From the late 1940s to the late 1980s, this branch of “bourgeois philosophy” never ceased to generate renewed attention. However, this reception was not subsumed into the ideological orthodoxy, nor was it simply destined to fuel Marxist–Leninist criticism. Whereas Georg Lukács’s polemics with existentialism in the 1940s set the agenda to embrace…
Time and Matter: Historicity, Facticity and the Question of Phenomenological Realism
Intentionality and objectification: Husserl and Simmel on the cognitive and social conditions of experience
Husserl?s transcendental turn can be best regarded as a turn in his phenomenological models of intentionality. While in the Logical Investigations, he maintains a conception according to which intentionality is a structure of cognitive directedness in which objectification plays a formative role, in his later works the intentional relation is considered as a structure of consciousness founded on a sphere of purely subjective interiority. This pap…
Between Theory and History: On the Interdisciplinary Practice in Michel Foucault's Work
The works of Michel Foucault often disappoint those who are approaching it from a solid disciplinary basis. In this paper I will argue that if the attempt to interpret Foucault's work from the standpoint of a certain academic discipline, be it philosophy or history, may lead to ambiguous consequences, then there is still a possibility to consider it from an interdisciplinary point of view. I will indicate two aspects of Foucault's interdisciplina…
