  • Intimate war across borders: Terrifying encounters, recognition, and "the Colombian armed conflict" in Quito, Ecuador

    Open Access•Ari Ackerman•ARTICLE•American Anthropologist•2025•References: 45

Much anthropological scholarship on war-particularly "civil war"-focuses on violence perpetrated between organized political groups within the confines of a national space. In contrast, this article examines how "internal armed conflict" manifests across international borders, irrupting as interpersonal violence in spaces that are supposedly external to war. More specifically, I demonstrate how "the Colombian armed conflict" unfolds between refug…

  • “Everything I Have Seen There, That I Know …”: Witnessing the Colombian armed conflict through refugees’ narratives of implication

    Open Access•Ari Ackerman•ARTICLE•PoLAR Political and Legal…•2024

In this article, I engage with the predicament of witnessing as a condition for persecution and displacement. I argue that observing violence during war is a critical form of implication. In the context of the Colombian armed conflict, members of armed groups often threaten the lives of those who observe their acts of violence, producing a chain of terror that extends outward from the original moment of witnessing. This chain of violence collapse…

  • The genesis of and internal tensions in the halakhic philosophy of Yeshayahu Leibowitz

Ari Ackerman•ARTICLE•Journal of Modern Jewish Studies•2024

The main focus of scholarship on Yeshayahu Leibowitz's philosophy and social criticism has been on his books and articles that were composed after his immigration to Palestine in 1935 at the age of 32. Little attention has been paid to Leibowitz's first efforts in forging his philosophical outlook that preceded his move to Palestine. This initial literary activity was produced in German between 1929 and 1932 when Leibowitz resided in Germany and …

  • Eliezer Schweid’s Scholarly and Philosophical Exploration of Theological Responses to the Holocaust

    Open Access•Ari Ackerman•ARTICLE•Holocaust and Genocide Studies•2022

Eliezer Schweid, one of the most important contemporary scholars of Jewish thought, devoted two volumes to analyzing theological responses to the Holocaust. Wrestling until Daybreak (1990) covered a diverse range of non-Orthodox Jewish thinkers, and Between Destruction and Redemption (1994) examined ultra-Orthodox Holocaust theology. This article will examine how scholarship, philosophy, and theology are intertwined in these two volumes

  • Ḥasdai Crescas and Scholastic Philosophers on the Possible Existence of Multiple Simultaneous Worlds

Ari Ackerman, Ari Ackerman Ari Ackerman•ARTICLE•Aleph•2017

Scholars who examine the possible influence of scholastic writers on Crescas’ treatment of the existence of multiple worlds have thus far focused on Nicole Oresme’s Latin and French works. It is proposed here that Crescas may have been influenced by Thomas Aquinas’ treatment of the multiple worlds. More specifically, Crescas’ first two arguments for the existence of multiple worlds, presented in the fourth treatise of Or Hashem , are compared wit…

  • Zerahia Halevi Saladin and Joseph Albo on Natural, Conventional and Divine Law

    Ari Ackerman•ARTICLE•Jewish Studies Quarterly•2013

  • Ḥasdai Crescas on the Philosophic Foundation of Codification

Open Access•Ari Ackerman•ARTICLE•AJS Review The Journal of the…•2013

Ḥasdai Crescas briefly adumbrated his halakhic methodology in the introduction to his philosophic work, 'Or ha-Shem. He followed Maimonides by arguing for the importance of a comprehensive and succinct legal code and opposed himself to those who ascribe independent value to Torah study. However, Crescas disputed Maimonides on the proper goals and character of a legal code. Unlike Maimonides, he designated his code for Torah scholars and focused o…

  • Zerahia Halevi Saladin and Thomas Aquinas on Vows

Ari Ackerman•ARTICLE•Journal of Jewish Thought and…•2011

This article examines two medieval sermons that examine philosophic and halakhic issues: the Passover sermon of Hasdai Crescas, which discusses the laws of Passover, and a sermon of Zerahia Halevi Saladin, a disciple of Crescas, which probes an aspect of the laws of vows ( nedarim ). In the analysis of Zerahia’s sermon, a comparison is made between his discussion and Thomas Aquinas’s examination of vows in his Summa Theologica . The comparison es…

  • Taurodont, pyramidal and fused molar roots associated with other anomalies in a kindred

    Open Access•James L Ackerman, A Leon Ackerman et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1973•Cited by: 5•References: 16

Crown characteristics have been the parameter most frequently utilized in studies of tooth morphology. Dental root structures have received relatively little attention. Examination of unusual molar roots in a kindred has enabled us to (1) establish a typology for classifying molar roots, (2) devise a methodology for evaluating the degree of taurodontism and (3) hypothesize about phylogenetic, ontogenetic and genetic aspects of root morphology. Th…
