Global shifts in the geopolitics of chemical discovery
At the turn of the 21st century, China has achieved a spectacular surge in the scientific arena. However, its influence on the material core of chemistry, encoded in the chemical space of discovered substances, remains unexplored. Here we show, by analyzing the chemical space between 1996 and 2022, that its expansion has been dominated by China ever since 2013. Chinese dominance occurs at different levels, from organic to rare-earth chemistry, bu…
The Past as a Stochastic Process
Historical processes manifest remarkable diversity. Nevertheless, scholars have long attempted to identify patterns and categorize historical actors and influences with some success. A stochastic process framework provides a structured approach for the analysis of large historical datasets that allows for detection of sometimes surprising patterns, identification of relevant causal actors both endogenous and exogenous to the process, and comparis…
A simple differential geometry for complex networks
We introduce new definitions of sectional, Ricci, and scalar curvatures for networks and their higher dimensional counterparts, derived from two classical notions of curvature for curves in general metric spaces, namely, the Menger curvature and the Haantjes curvature. These curvatures are applicable to unweighted or weighted and undirected or directed networks and are more intuitive and easier to compute than other network curvatures. In particu…
Network Analysis for the Digital Humanities
Traditional historical scholarship struggles to keep up with the rapid pace of modern scientific publication trends. Even focusing on a particular scientific field, the rate of new publications far outpaces even the most studious historian's research capacity. This essay summarizes an approach to this problem that uses computational techniques of network analysis. As a complement to close analysis of particular documents, network analysis can giv…
Luhmanns Gesellschaftstheorie
Formal Aspects of the Emergence of Institutions
We argue that social institutions emerge on the basis of the human cognitive ability to integrate an evaluation of the behavior and performances of other group members over long time periods. The results of those evaluations are condensed into the social status of an individual, and that status is the link between short time achievements and long term success within the group. Altruistic behavior on a short time scale can be advantageous for an i…
