The Great January Comet of 1910 (C/1910 A1)
C/1910 A1 was one of the Great Comets of the twentieth century. Although it was widely observed from the Northern Hemisphere, it was first discovered by observers south of the Equator. The comet arrived just months before the widely anticipated apparition of Comet 1P/Halley and was significantly more spectacular. As a result, the two comets were confused, and many who, in later years, talked about how prominent Comet 1P/Halley was in 1910 were of…

The 1989 Opotiki Bolide
On Monday 12 June 1989 a detonating fireball was widely observed from the East Coast-Bay of Plenty region of New Zealand, and subsequently a number of small meteoritic specimens were recovered near Opotiki. These were submitted to the Geological Survey of New Zealand in Wellington where they were identified as fragments of a carbonaceous chondrite. However, no detailed account of this meteorite was written up and published either at that time or …
Sympathetic Respect, Respectful Sympathy
Voluntary Action, Chosen Action, and Resolve
This paper provides a phenomenological account of the intentional structure of action. To establish the context, I first distinguish (a) physiological changes and the bodily motions manifesting them that one passively undergoes in response to external causes from (b) actions as such. With respect to actions, I further distinguish among what I call incomplete actions, voluntary actions, and chosen actions. I shall frame my discussion in terms of t…

Ronald A. McIntosh
The Auckland amateur astronomer Ronald A. McIntosh was New Zealand's premier meteor researcher from the mid-1920s through the mid-1940s and was a leading authority on Southern Hemisphere meteor showers. Using his own visual observations and those contributed by other members of the Meteor Section of the New Zealand Astronomical Society (later the Royal Astronomical Society of New Zealand) McIntosh was able to write a succession of research papers…

Observations of the Great September Comet of 1882 (C/1882 R1) From New Zealand
In this companion paper to Kapoor's (2020) study of Indian observations made of the Great Southern Comet of 1882 (C/1882 R1), we examine observations of this comet made from another British colony, New Zealand. We review New Zealand newspaper accounts of this impressive comet, and we critically examine the popular claim that someone from Auckland, New Zealand, was one of the first in the world to see and report the comet. We conclude by reviewing…
Communication Issues in War-Time Astronomy
In this paper we briefly examine the communication problems that occurred in international astronomy during World War II by discussing independent discoveries of Comet C/1941 B2 that were made by Australian, Indian, New Zealand and South African astronomers
Intentionality and (Moral) Normativity
This chapter provides an alternative to Crowell’s account of normativity and its ground in anticipatory resoluteness. The chapter argues that intentionality with its orientation toward truthfulness is a “primitive” or “basic” notion that is sufficient to disclose the realm of meaning and to account for the normativity we find in human experience. Intentionality—minding the world—has as its telos getting to the truth of the matter in all the domai…
The Mount Tarawera Volcanic Eruption in New Zealand and Māori Cometary Astronomy
In The Astronomical Knowledge of the Maori , which was first published in 1922, the Dominion Ethnologist Elsdon Best mentions that the name Tiramaroa was applied to comets, and that Tiramaroa was seen about the time of the Tarawera eruption (which occurred on 10 June 1886), and also during the siege of Te Tapiri in 1865. In this paper we identify naked eye comets that were visible from New Zealand in 1865 and 1886, and examine other comets seen d…
