Defeats will be defeats
While scholars in rhetoric have long studied President Lyndon Johnson’s selling of his Vietnam policies, the intra-administration deliberative practices that led to those policies has been of little interest. Yet, among political and military historians, it is simply a given that the flawed deliberation led to the flawed decisions. This article looks at the spring 1964 internal rhetoric among the major advisers in order to argue that the notoriou…
Demagogues in American Politics by Charles U. Zug
The rise of authoritarian and charismatic populists has given rise to interdisciplinary interest in the vexed topic of demagogues—a term that has long had multiple definitions. Initially, it was a neutral term, meaning someone who was a leader of the Athenian non-elite (the demes). For classical authors like Aristophanes or Thucydides, a demagogue might be good (Pericles) or bad (Cleon). In Rhetoric, Aristotle seems to characterize a demagogue by…
The Mask of War and the War of Masks
In the US, mask wearing, while opposed and evaded by people all over the political spectrum (albeit not equally), was disproportionately associated with reactionary political affiliation, especially in its most demagogic and violent forms. Anti-mask demagoguery associated mask wearing and mask mandates with communism, Nazism, satanism, genocide, suicide and a war on America. This article argues that this demagoguery was not unique to masks or COV…
Photo age
Autobiographical memories show a temporal pattern with relatively many events recalled from the recent past (recency) and from adolescence to early adulthood (reminiscence bump), and very few events recalled from the first few years of life (childhood amnesia). The current study examined a temporal pattern for external memory – information stored outside of one's brain. Three survey studies asked participants to choose which age(s) in their life …
Jewish Identity and Civil Rights in America by Kenneth L. Marcus
Unmarried motherhood
Content analysis was used to examine the childhood experiences of 22 autobiographers whose mother was unmarried when they were born. Their childhoods varied considerably. For significant periods of time, 12 lived with their mother alone or with her and their own father or a stepfather, 5 lived with their mother and her parents, 2 lived with unmarried aunts, and 7 lived in foster homes. Three mothers died, one was institutionalized and one abandon…
University
Psychologists interested in exploring differences between sexes on various aspects of human behaviour most often employ undergraduate (psychology) students as subjects. Here, in spite of reported evidence suggesting significant differences between sexes on attitudes towards arcade games, for 24 men and 24 women university students, no significant sex differences were observed. Generalisability of research on psychological aspects of such sex diff…
