  • Should Mothers Work? How Perceptions of the Social Norm Affect Individual Attitudes Toward Work in the U.S

Patricia Cortés, Gizem Koşar et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2024

We study how peer beliefs shape individual attitudes toward maternal labor supply using hypothetical scenarios that elicit recommendations on the labor supply choices of a mother with a young child and an information treatment embedded within geographically representative surveys of the US population. Across scenarios, we find that individuals are systematically misinformed about the extent of gender conservativeness of the people around them. Ex…

    Open Access•Jonathan A Obar, Jessica Pan•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Communication•2021

Background: Engaging users in the network neutrality debate requires that internet service providers (internet carriers) communicate information about the management of network traffic. Policy materials on corporate websites suggest carriers demonstrate poor ITMP transparency, averaging 0.…

  • Gender Gap under Pressure

Xiqian Cai, Yi Lü et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2019

We examine gender differences in the response to competitive pressure using data from the most competitive entrance exam—China's Gaokao. Compared to male students, females underperform on the competitive and high-stakes Gaokao, relative to their performance on the low-stakes mock examination. Moreover, women's performance suffers more than men's in response to negative performance shocks in an earlier exam on the same day. These effects are more …

  • Gender Identity and Relative Income within Households

Marianne Bertrand, Emir Kamenica et al.•ARTICLE•The Quarterly Journal of Economics•2015

We examine causes and consequences of relative income within households. We show that the distribution of the share of income earned by the wife exhibits a sharp drop to the right of 12 , where the wife’s income exceeds the husband’s income. We argue that this pattern is best explained by gender identity norms, which induce an aversion to a situation where the wife earns more than her husband. We present evidence that this aversion also impacts m…

  • The Trouble with Boys

Marianne Bertrand, Jessica Pan•ARTICLE•American Economic Journal Applied…•2013

This paper explores the importance of the home and school environments in explaining the gender gap in disruptive behavior. We document large differences in the gender gap across key features of the home environment—boys do especially poorly in broken families. In contrast, we find little impact of the early school environment on noncognitive gaps. Differences in endowments explain a small part of boys' noncognitive deficit in single-mother famil…
