Development and inter-rater reliability of the Equity Literacy Observation Protocol for secondary school teachers (ELOPSST)
A teacher education programme in the U.S. moved to frame its activities around equity literacy (EL). EL involves the development of the ability to 1) recognise inequity even in its most subtle forms, 2) respond to such inequities, 3) offer some sort of redress to the inequities, and 4) cultivate and sustain equity. This article presents the process by which the faculty and staff of this teacher education programme engaged the tension of developin…
Surveying Student/Intern Teachers for Their Development of Equity Literacy via Indigenous Epistemology
Creating equitable classrooms is difficult for many preservice teachers. Addressing this challenge includes helping them understand what equity is and recognizing how teaching practices contribute to (in)equitable learning environments. This investigation describes how one teacher education program approaches helping students by employing an Indigenous epistemology, Nahui Ollin, to develop students’ equity literacy. This work describes how studen…
Toward a Racial Microaggressions Model Analysis of White Innocence
Dynamic archetypes of agricultural land systems in Germany from 1992 to 2019
Grasslands, important agricultural land systems, are undergoing significant shifts such as intensification, abandonment, and conversion to alternative land uses in Europe, leading to biodiversity loss. Despite major efforts, the European Union ́s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) has been unable to halt the decline of grasslands and to appropriately adjust management intensity because implemented policies have not considered the heterogeneity of g…
Validity and validation in archetype analysis
Archetype analysis is a promising approach in sustainability science to identify patterns and explain mechanisms shaping the sustainability of social-ecological systems. Although considerable efforts have been devoted to developing quality standards and methodological advances for archetype analysis, archetype validation remains a major challenge. Drawing on the insights from two international workshops on archetype analysis and on broader litera…
White innocence as an investigative frame in a schooling context
Ineffective and oppressive schooling of people of color has been obstinate and widespread. Disinviting and hostile practices often engaged through written and oral discourses contribute to this condition. Thus, identifying such discourses becomes imperative to reversing these conditions and creating equitable schooling. This essay proposes the use of critical analysis of white innocence as a concept to investigate prejudicial schooling practices.…
Suited to Their Needs”
Discourses that supported de jure segregated schools often invoked White innocence in the form of altruistic motivations. These same invocations are found in more contemporary school policy discourses. The authors of this article argue, based on the concept of intertextuality of discourse, the existence of contemporary schooling policies as vestiges of segregation
Impacts of Arizona’s SB 1070 on Mexican American Students’ Stress, School Attachment, and Grades
Understanding the impacts of immigration legislation on Mexican ethnic students who are citizens of the United States is needed. This study investigates how passage of Arizona’s anti-immigration law, SB 1070, in 2010 bears upon the schooling experiences of Mexican American high school students. Applying Meyer’s Minority Stress Model as the theoretical foundation for this work, the authors ultimately explore, 1) whether perceived discrimination al…
Framing Hostilities
This study examined discourses used in mission statements from segregated Chicana/o and White schools. The words and phrases used in segregated Chicana/o school mission statements produce negatively oriented frames that make transparent low expectations and negative attitudes compared to those used in segregated White schools. These frames become part of a hegemonic milieu that produces hostilities in the schooling of Chicanas/os. I argue that sc…
Racism and Power
The article discusses a legislation that would effectively terminate Mexican American Studies programs in k-12 was passed in Arizona in 2010. In this article, the author traces how this legislation drew from discourses of anti-Americanism and wickedness initiated by the state’s superintendent of public instruction against Mexican American Studies and from larger social antagonistic language regarding Mexican ethnics. The author uses critical disc…
‘It is certainly strange…’
In 2010, Arizona passed legislation that attacked ethnic studies in k-12 (kindergarten to 12th grade). Specifically, Mexican American/Raza Studies (MARS) was targeted by the state Superintendent of Public Instruction (SPI), and, in effect, would be eliminated by the Prohibited Courses; Discipline; Schools Law (Prohibited Courses Law). This study utilizes document and content analysis to examine both a letter written by the SPI calling for the eli…
