This study examined discourses used in mission statements from segregated Chicana/o and White schools. The words and phrases used in segregated Chicana/o school mission statements produce negatively oriented frames that make transparent low expectations and negative attitudes compared to those used in segregated White schools. These frames become part of a hegemonic milieu that produces hostilities in the schooling of Chicanas/os. I argue that schools can contribute to the creation of counter-hegemonic spaces by critically reflecting upon the discourses used in mission statements and selecting words and phrases that construct optimistic frames of Chicana/o students. Keywords: Chicana/osegregationschoolsmission statementshegemony Notes 1In this work, Chicana/o refers to people in the United States of Mexican ethnicity. 2I use Citationvan Dijk's (2006) notion of ideology as “systems of ideas” that a social group shares to “organize its identity, actions, aims, norms and values, and resources as well as its relations to other social groups” (p. 115). 3I use the phrase push-out in recognition of the role that schools have in the maintenance of high noncompletion rates for Chicanas/os. 4Two out of 16 total mission statements from segregated White schools revealed pessimistic perceptions when analyzed critically using the same CDA tools
