EU discourse on Mindanao
This paper examines how the European Union (EU) has discursively represented Mindanao in official texts from the 1980s to the 2020s. Using the Discourse-Historical Approach, it analyzes 84 documents from the European Commission, the European Parliament and the Court of Justice. Two dominant framings emerge, namely conflict and aid. Conflict discourse shifts from separatist insurgency to terrorism in the post-9/11 period and later to governance an…
The Seriousness of Humorous Content
This paper employs a discourse-historical approach to analyze the memes shared by the political opposition during the 2022 presidential elections in the Philippines. To do this, researchers examined the content shared within a Facebook group given the pseudonym “Opposition House of Memes.” The examination of more than two thousand memes found that the content could be categorized into five themes: (1) criticisms against the Marcos family; (2) cri…
Working or working out? Exploring the occupational devotion of part-time Les Mills instructors in the Philippines
This paper examines the occupational devotion of part-time group fitness instructors at a Philippine gym, which was given the pseudonym The Fit Stop. These instructors, employed full-time in fields such as medicine, education, and advertising, teach fitness classes primarily out of passion rather than financial necessity, while still acknowledging the legitimacy and obligations of their paid roles. Using an ethnographic approach, the study shows …

Performing without a script
In 2013, the Philippines shifted from a ten to a thirteen year basic education curriculum. Expanding the number of years of schooling necessitated the addition of new grade levels, including Grades 11 and 12, collectively referred to as ‘Senior High School’. The teachers who first taught in these levels were in a situation in which they had to carry out their work without a prescribed modus operandi. There was no precedent for how one dealt with …
Philippine anger and American conciliation
This paper is a case study on the restitution of the Balangiga Bells by the United States to the Philippines, which has been a decades-long contested issue in the two countries’ relations. This research applies the concepts of restitution, emotional diplomacy and discourse. This paper presents an exceptional instance in which the return of war trophies was achieved through bilateral arrangements rather than multilateral action. The approach exami…
Summoners’ Rift
This article examines fan articulations in response to a Facebook post announcing the results of the final match between G2 Esports and Fun Plus Phoenix (FPX) during the 2019 League of Legends World Championships. Five themes emerged after analysing the data, which are: (1) expressions of congratulations to FPX, the team that won the championship; (2) references to SK Telecom T1, a Korean team that has won the most titles in LoL World Championshi…

The group, referred to in this study as the European Meme Society, exhibits memes, which, at their simplest, refer to images, text, and videos that spread from person to person via the Internet, and are altered and repeated for a short period of time. Posts on the page include humorous stereotypes about European…
Cine Europa
Cine Europa is a European Union Film Festival that has been staged annually in the Philippines since 1997. The EU attempts to augment Europe’s visibility through this effort, as European countries, through their corresponding embassies and cultural institutes, submit a film entry to exhibit to Philippine audiences. This paper characterises Cine Europa as a collaborative cultural diplomacy event, due to the participation of multiple states in one …
