Understanding Iran’s policy towards the Ukraine war
This study examines the role of factional and ideational factors in shaping Iran’s foreign policy towards the Ukraine war and its alignment with Russia. It addresses two key questions: Why did Iran side with Russia instead of remaining neutral or using the war to improve relations with the West? And how did the influential conservative factions justify this policy as serving national or factional interests? To answer these, the study adopts a con…
The formative years of Iran’s ‘jihadi field diplomacy’ in Azerbaijan
This study examines the formative years of Iran's so-called 'jihadi field diplomacy' toward Azerbaijan during and after the First Nagorno-Karabakh War. To accomplish this, I adopt a novel version of neoclassical realism, which considers the socially constructed nature of variables. The application of constructivist neoclassical realism facilitates a deeper comprehension of the reasons and mechanisms behind Iran's embrace of unconventional interve…
Imagined Iran After the Arrival of Islam in Aryanist Orientalist, Nationalist and Islamist Historiography
This study investigates the orientalist, nationalist, and Islamist historiography of Iran during the late Qajar and Pahlavi eras. More specifically, using the Critical Discourse Analysis method the study examines texts produced by some of the main figures of these three groups to explore the ways they reconstructed the image of 'Iran' and 'Iranians' during the first four centuries of the Islamic era. The results show that the race-based approache…

This study examines the ways in which various aspects of Turkish modernity, including gender reforms and nation-building, were reconstructed by the Berlin Circle, whose members were the ideologues of nationalist authoritarian modernization in Iran. To this end, I analyzed texts published between 1923 and 25 in Iranshahr and Nameye Farangestan, two important periodicals of the Berlin Circle. The results of this study show that while gender reforms…
