Protected by Faith? Religion and Covid-19 Vaccination Uptake among Young Adults in Germany
While religion has been widely discussed as a barrier to COVID-19 vaccination, the link between religiosity and vaccination behavior remains underexplored, especially in secular societies and for actual vaccination instead of intentions. This study examines whether and how religiosity is associated with COVID-19 vaccination uptake in Germany, using data from the CILS4EU-DE study, collected from March 2022 onward. Multiple-group structural equatio…

The CILS4NEPS project combined and harmonized panel data from the Children of Immigrants Longitudinal Survey in Four European Countries (CILS4EU) and Starting Cohort 4 of the German National Educational Panel Study (NEPS SC4). This unlocks additional research potential beyond the scope of both individual datasets by increasing sample sizes and enabling international comparisons of the NEPS data. Both, the combined dataset as well as additional ma…
Andererseits zeigen viele quantitative Studien, …
Police discrimination and police distrust among ethnic minority adolescents in Germany
In light of ongoing debates about racially motivated police violence, this paper examines two separate but interrelated phenomena: instances of police discrimination and mistrust in police and the judicial system among ethnic minorities in Germany. Analyses are carried out based on waves 1, 3, and 5 of the CILS4EU-DE data collected among 14 to 20 year-old respondents in Germany. The focus of the paper lies on young men from the Middle East, as we…
Armed conflict as a threat to social cohesion: Large-scale displacement and its short- and long-term effects on in-group perceptions
This study investigates the short- and long-term consequences of armed conflict and displacement on social cohesion among citizens within attacked nations, using Ukraine and Bosnia and Herzegovina as case studies. Through a pre-registered vignette study in Ukraine (December 2022; N = 1,623), we reveal a significant difference in social cohesion between those who stayed in the country during the war and those who left. This difference intensified …
DeZIM.panel – Data for Germany’s Post-Migrant Society
The German DeZIM.panel is an online access panel that provides data specifically for topics regarding migration and integration. It includes an oversampling for several migrant groups in Germany, and thus allows specific subgroup analyses. Due to its longitudinal structure, its long-term development and the effects of sudden external events can be traced and analyzed
The hidden majority/minority consensus: Minorities show similar preference patterns of immigrant support as the majority population
The acceptance of new arrivals has become an important topic regarding the social cohesion of the receiving countries. However, previous studies focused only on the native population's drivers of attitudes towards immigrants, disregarding that immigrant-origin inhabitants now form a considerable part of the population. To test whether the drivers for the willingness to support immigrants are the same for natives and immigrants and their descendan…
Is 'immigrant optimism' in educational choice a problem? Ethnic gaps in Swedish upper secondary school completion
In many Western countries, researchers have documented ambitious educational choices among students of immigrant origin, for example, the tendency to choose academically more demanding routes than others at given levels of school achievement (e.g. grades, GPA). While this may indicate integration, some warn against an 'immigrant optimism trap', because choosing more demanding tracks at lower levels of GPA may increase risks of non-completion. Usi…
The Political Integration of Immigrants: How Pre- and Postmigration Contexts Matter
This study examines the political integration of immigrants in Germany and asks whether immigrants and their descendants show similar rates of political participation and expression of political attitudes as the population without an immigrant background. Furthermore, the study focusses on the pre- and postmigration context of immigrants and analyses whether immigrants differ in their level of political integration depending on (1) whether they c…
Covid-19–associated discrimination in Germany
This study examines whether ethnic minorities in general and Asian minorities in particular have perceived an increase in discrimination during the COVID-19 pandemic, a phenomenon known as COVID-19-associated discrimination (CAD). Drawing on the CILS4COVID data, which were collected among 3,517 individuals in the initial phase of the pandemic (mainly between April and June 2020), we demonstrate that especially Asian minorities (n = 80) report ins…
In the Ear of the Listener: The Role of Foreign Accent in Interethnic Friendships and Partnerships
This article examines the association between accented speech and the formation of friendships and partnerships among immigrants and native-born majority residents in Germany. Drawing on the sixth wave of the German extension of the Children of Immigrants Longitudinal Survey in Four European Countries, we analyze a neglected aspect of language — pronunciation — and find that speaking with a foreign accent is a more important correlate of the inci…
Ethnic inequality in choice- and performance-driven education systems: A longitudinal study of educational choices in England, Germany, the Netherlands, and Sweden
The motivation for this article was the main finding of an earlier study, which concludes that choice-driven education systems-in the study represented by England and Sweden-are particularly beneficial for immigrants in that they provide them with many opportunities to pursue their generally high educational ambitions. We extend this analysis by including two countries with performance-driven education systems: Germany and the Netherlands. Our st…
The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on risk perceptions: Differences between ethnic groups in Germany
Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, people perceive their health and finances to be at greater risk than before. Using data from CILS4COVID, an add-on study to the German long-term project CILS4EU-DE, surveying young adults aged 24–26, we show that these risk perceptions are prevalent in populations with a former Yugoslavian, Turkish, and Asian background, although we find only few differences between the German majority and the ethnic mino…
Classroom composition and language skills: The role of school class and friend characteristics
The present study addresses the question to what extent language skills among students are influenced by the composition of the overall classroom context and the composition of friendship networks within school classes. Furthermore, we ask whether the effects differ between stratified school systems, with a more homogenous student body in school classes, and comprehensive school systems, with a more heterogeneous student body. Focusing only on cl…
The Story after Immigrants' Ambitious Educational Choices: Real Improvement or Back to Square One
It is a well-established finding in the literature that immigrants make ambitious educational choices. Once controlling for prior achievement and socioeconomic status, children of immigrants are more likely than natives to switch to the more demanding educational tracks. However, less is known about whether immigrants can actually benefit from these optimistic choices in terms of educational attainment or whether they have a higher risk of droppi…
Studying Integration from Adolescence to Early Adulthood: Design, Content, and Research Potential of the Cils4EU-DE Data
This data brief describes the German part and extension of the Children of Immigrants Longitudinal Survey in Four European Countries (CILS4EU-DE). The aim of CILS4EU-DE is to provide a data-infrastructure for theory-driven and evidence-based research on various aspects of integration among young people with and without an immigrant background in Germany. Key features of the survey are (i) its large and representative sample, with an oversampling …
Positive choices for all? SES- and gender-specific premia of immigrants at educational transitions
Der Übergang von der Primar- in die Sekundarstufe
Less Choice, Less Inequality? A Natural Experiment on Social and Ethnic Differences in Educational Decision-Making
Almost all Western societies are characterized by social and ethnic inequalities in educational attainment. There is growing awareness of policymakers about the problems arising from such disparities, accompanied by attempts to reduce these inequalities by adequate educational policies. One strategy is to affect the parental educational decision-making process by manipulating students’ and parents’ freedom of choice at different transitions durin…
