Long‐term environmental monitoring in the UK
The Plynlimon catchments are the UK’s most intensively studied long‐term research basins, with 40 years of hydrological and hydrochemical observations. Used to study the impacts of land cover, their establishment, progress and achievements is a complex story of scientific advances in response to national needs, set against a background of academic controversy and competing stakeholder pressures, that remains relevant today. Established to answer …

A Trend-Surface Analysis Trial for the Planation Surfaces of North Cardiganshire
An objective study is made of the landscape of the Aberystwyth hinterland. The results show that, of the earlier studies, E. H. Brown's division of the area into three was the most rational. A CONSIDERABLE amount of attention has been given to the origin and form of the relief of north Cardiganshire during the last hundred years or so. The different workers1 have distinguished a variety of plateau surfaces, usually at dissimilar levels and even t…
Rainfall Excesses in the United Kingdom
Rainfall has been recorded in the United Kingdom in a systematic fashion for over Ioo years. Information about the incidence of heavy rain is of particular interest to the hydrologist for use in flood prediction, but the data need to be classified. Bilham devised one method of classifying and predicting the frequency of heavy rain, but another more satisfactory approach is through the use of a Gumbel-type extreme value analysis, as this allows ma…
