  • Justice, Inequality, and the Joy of Discovery

    Open Access•Cristóbal Moya, J Adriaans•ARTICLE•Social Justice Research•2026

This essay—based on an interview with Guillermina Jasso, Silver Professor of Arts and Science and Professor of Sociology at New York University and recipient of the 2025 Lifetime Achievement Award of the International Society for Justice Research—offers an in-depth reflection on her influential career in the social sciences. Spanning five decades of scholarship, Jasso’s work has shaped central debates on distributive justice, inequality, status, …

  • The East–West Gap in Pay Fairness Perceptions Converged Between 2009 and 2023

Open Access•J Adriaans, Carl Sauer•ARTICLE•KZfSS Kölner Zeitschrift für…•2026

This study investigates regional differences in pay fairness perceptions among employees in eastern and western Germany from 2009 to 2023. Using longitudinal data from the Socio-Economic Panel study, the analysis reveals substantial initial disparities: Employees in eastern Germany perceive their gross earnings as more unfair than employees in western Germany do. Over time, however, these regional differences diminish. Analyses stratified by wage…

  • The gender gap in fair earnings

    Open Access•J Adriaans, Carl Sauer et al.•ARTICLE•Socio-Economic Review•2025•References: 19

Research has consistently shown that lower earnings for women and higher earnings for men are generally regarded as fair by both women and men. Previous research has focused on structural factors to explain this phenomenon, but has neglected proximate relationships at work. This study examines how the supervisors’ gender relates to employees’ justice attitudes toward the earnings of men and women. We draw on data from two waves of a German employ…

  • The gender gap in fair earnings increases with age due to higher age premium for men

Open Access•J Adriaans, Carl Sauer et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Sociology•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 15

This study explores how gender and age interact in shaping beliefs about fair pay through a factorial survey experiment conducted with German employees. Respondents evaluated hypothetical worker descriptions varying in age, gender, and earnings. While no gender gap in fair earnings was found for the youngest hypothetical workers, a significant gap favoring men emerged with increasing age. This suggests that male workers receive a higher age premi…

  • Assessing the Measurement Quality of Justice Evaluations of Earnings in Europe

    Open Access•Cristóbal Moya, J Adriaans•ARTICLE•Social Justice Research•2024•References: 61

How individuals perceive the fairness of their pay carries profound implications for individuals and society. Perceptions of pay injustice are linked to a spectrum of negative outcomes, including diminished well-being, poor health, increased stress, and depressive symptoms, alongside various detrimental effects in the work domain. Despite the far-reaching impact of these justice evaluations, validity evidence on their measurement in survey resear…

  • Pay Justice and Pay Satisfaction

    Open Access•J Adriaans, Carl Sauer et al.•ARTICLE•Social Psychology Quarterly•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 39

This study compares two pay evaluations: pay justice and pay satisfaction. Conceptually, pay justice entails a moral assessment and is more specific to work, whereas pay satisfaction is a broader attitude that includes non-work-related factors. We analyzed German employee data and found overall similarity in determinants but differences in proximity to work contexts. Pay satisfaction was more strongly associated with private pay comparisons and s…

  • Fairness of earnings in Europe

    Open Access•J Adriaans•ARTICLE•European Sociological Review•2023•Cited by: 5•References: 60

A large percentage of workers in Europe perceive their earnings to be unfairly low. Such perceptions of unfairness can have far-reaching consequences, ranging from low satisfaction to poor health. To gain insight into the conditions that can attenuate or amplify these adverse consequences, comparative research on the role of country contexts in shaping responses to perceived unfairness is needed. Furthermore, justice theory proposes that both typ…

  • Unjust Income Inequality Prevails Across 29 Countries

    Open Access•Cristóbal Moya, J Adriaans et al.•ARTICLE•Socius Sociological Research for…•2023•Cited by: 3•References: 4

The aim of this visualization is to describe justice evaluations of income inequality from a cross-country perspective for more than 72,000 respondents in 29 countries. The analyses were based on data from two large, cross-country survey programs. The International Social Survey Programme (ISSP) asked for an evaluation of the overall income distribution, and the European Social Survey (ESS) asked for justice evaluations of both bottom and top inc…

  • Basic social justice orientations—measuring order-related justice in the European Social Survey Round 9

Open Access•J Adriaans, Marie Fourré•ARTICLE•Measurement Instruments for the…•2022

Individuals hold normative ideas about the just distribution of goods and burdens within a social aggregate. These normative ideas guide the evaluation of existing inequalities and refer to four basic principles: (1) Equality stands for an equal distribution of rewards and burdens. While the principle of (2) need takes individual contributions into account, (3) equity suggests a distribution based on merit. The (4) entitlement principle suggests …

  • Data on Digital Transformation in the German Socio-Economic Panel

Open Access•Alexandra Fedorets, Stefan Kirchner et al.•ARTICLE•Jahrbucher fur Nationalokonomie…•2022

Public debates and current research on “digitalization” suggest that digital technologies could profoundly transform the world of work. While broad claims are common in these debates, empirical evidence remains scarce. This calls for reliable data for empirical research and evidence-based policymaking. We implemented a data module in the Socio-Economic Panel to gather information on digitalization in three domains: artificial intelligence (AI), p…

Research on gender differences in fairness evaluations of own earnings in 28 European countries based on ESS Round 9 data

  • What’s in a Word? Just vs. Fair vs. Appropriate Earnings for Self and Others

    Open Access•J Adriaans, Stefan Liebig et al.•ARTICLE•Social Justice Research•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 39

Despite Rawls’ famous call to distinguish between justice and fairness, these and other justice-related words often seem to be used interchangeably by both ordinary people and justice researchers. Based on a survey-embedded question wording experiment ( N = 4534) fielded in Germany as part of the GESIS Panel, we explore the effects of three justice words— “just,” “fair,” and “appropriate”—on the sense of justice about earnings for self and others…
