Relations between ethnic‐racial identity statuses and critical consciousness among Latine adolescents
Ethnic-racial identity (ERI) development reflects the processes through which adolescents learn about their ethnic-racial background (i.e., exploration) and develop clarity about what it means to them (i.e., resolution). Research on ERI has been critiqued for not examining connections between ERI and broader social beliefs, such as critical consciousness (i.e., individuals' level of reflection about social oppression, motivation to take action ag…
Ethnic-racial identity as a developmental asset in the context of marginalization
Exposure to ethnic-racial discrimination is a common experience for immigrant and ethnic-racial minoritized youth in the United States. Given the detrimental effects of exposure to ethnic-racial discrimination for minoritized youth development and adjustment, it is important to elucidate risk-reducing mechanisms, processes set in motion in response to risk that support adolescent adjustment. Specifically, this study investigated whether ethnic-ra…
Ethnic-Racial Identity, Discrimination Experiences, and Academic Adjustment among Colombian Adolescents
The deleterious effects of ethnic-racial discrimination on youth’s academic adjustment are well-documented. Although theory and empirical studies point to the protective and promotive role of ethnic-racial identity (ERI) development for academic adjustment in contexts of adversity, its role in the academic adjustment of Colombian adolescents is unknown. Guided by an academic resilience framework, we examined the associations among ERI, ethnic-rac…

Professional Development for Providing Time and Opportunities for Change in U.S. Teachers’ Ethnic-Racial Identity
The purpose of this qualitative study was to describe teachers' perceptions of changes in their ethnic-racial identity after completing professional development designed to support facilitation of a school-based ethnic-racial identity student curriculum – the Identity Project. We analyzed interview data from 11 U.S. high school educators (four Teachers of Color; seven White Teachers) who completed 32 training hours and post-program individual int…
A Person-Centered Analysis of Adolescent Multicultural Socialization Niches and Academic Functioning
Despite the growing cultural diversity worldwide, there is scarce research on how socialization processes prepare youth to respond to increasing multicultural demands and the degree to which these socialization opportunities inform youth academic functioning. This study used a person-centered approach to identify profiles or niches based on the degree and consistency of multicultural socialization experiences across school, peer, and family setti…
Bicultural identity and adjustment among ethnoracially minoritized and immigrant adolescents
For ethnoracially minoritized and immigrant youth, identity formation involves efforts to integrate social identities that are derived from their ethnic-racial group memberships (i.e., ethnic-racial identity) and their connection to the country in which they reside (i.e., national identity). This study investigated the extent to which these two social identities were simultaneously associated with adolescents’ psychosocial adjustment via their as…
Bicultural competence and academic adjustment across Latino youth adaptation from high school to college
This study investigated the association between bicultural competence and academic adjustment (i.e., engagement, efficacy, achievement) among 193 Latino youth (65.3% female; 89.1% U.S.-born) followed from their senior high school year (Mage = 17.58 years, SD = 0.53) to their fifth college semester (2016–2019). Latent growth analyses revealed that youth's overall bicultural competence trajectory was moderately high and stable across this period. Y…
The role of ethnic–racial and national identities on U.S. Latino adolescents’ global identity coherence and adjustment

The Influence of Ethnic-Racial Identity Developmental Processes on Global Bicultural Competence Development
This study investigated ethnic-racial identity (ERI) developmental processes (i.e., exploration and resolution) as pathways for adolescents to develop global bicultural competence, or the ability to meet heritage and host cultural demands. The sample included 749 U.S. Mexican-origin youth (30% Mexico-born; 51% male) followed from early-to-late adolescence (Mage = 12.79–17.38 years). Longitudinal structural equation analyses revealed that youth’s …
A family stress model investigation of bicultural competence among U.S. Mexican-origin youth
Objectives: We investigated the influence of parental exposure to family stressors on parents' ethnic socialization practices and adolescents' cultural competencies among U.S. Mexican-origin families. Method: The sample included 749 U.S. Mexican-origin families followed for 5 years (two-parent families = 579; single-mother families = 170). At the first wave, mean age was 35.9 years for mothers, 38.1 years for fathers, and 10.42 years for youths (…
Recent immigration actions and news and the adjustment of U.S. Latino/a adolescents
As 1-quarter of the U.S. child population is Latino/a, there is a need to address immigration threats jeopardizing the adjustment of Latino/a teenagers. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2021 APA, all rights reserved)
Family contextual influences on bicultural competence development among U.S. Mexican-origin youths
This study investigated how parents' value-based enculturation and acculturation processes (i.e., Mexican American and mainstream American values trajectories across their youths' development from late childhood to middle adolescence) related to their youths' behavioral, affective, and cognitive components of bicultural competence in late adolescence. Our sample included 749 U.S. Mexican-origin youths (30% Mexico-born; 49% female), and their pare…
U.S. Mexican-origin adolescents’ bicultural competence and mental health in context
The diversity found among U.S. Mexican-origin adolescents' niches underscores the need to assess context broadly by including a range of settings. Studying multiple components of bicultural competence across numerous cultural domains may provide a better understanding of any mental health benefits of biculturalism. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2019 APA, all rights reserved)
