Claiming integration, performing exclusion
This article examines Yamina Benguigui’s filmmaking in Mémoires d’immigrés, Le Plafond de verre / Les Défricheurs, and 9-3 mémoire d’un territoire, three documentaries that explore policies of the French government and their consequences on postcolonial immigrants and their children in France. Benguigui’s documentaries intertwine official and personal testimonies while erasing the director’s presence. I analyse the implications of this (failed) e…
Francophone Films to the Rescue
The Francophone world is characterized by a wide range of practices where multilingualism is more the rule than the exception, particularly in Africa. While the Francophonie movement has been decried by some as a neocolonial enterprise, it has had both positive and negative impacts on African cinema. I focus on the role played by indigenous languages in "Francophone" African films. I argue that the inclusion of multilingual films in Francophone S…
Narrating the Prophet’s life
The importance of the Prophet Mohammed cannot be overestimated for Muslims all over the world, not only as the historical figure who spread the third Abrahamic religion, but also because all aspects of his life were recorded and used to weigh in on exegetical, legislative and theological debates. Since the 1990s, the rise of Islamic fundamentalism in various contexts prompted a few Francophone North African writers to revisit Mohammed’s life crea…
And the Affair of the Muslim Headscarf in Essays by Tahar Ben Jelloun and Abdelwahab Meddeb
Ben Jelloun's L'Islam expliqué aux enfants and Meddeb's La Maladie de l'islam, both prompted by 9/11, share the similar intent and didactic function of countering reductive representations of Islam fostered by Islamic extremists and the media, and of tracing historically the link between terrorism and the Muslim faith. Taking into account their location (Ben Jelloun and Meddeb are prominent Maghrebian intellectuals who have been residing in Franc…

Language, Filiation, and Affiliation in Le la Sebbar's Autobiographical Narratives
This article examines how Sebbar's ambivalent relationship with the Arabic language is intertwined with issues of filiation and affiliation in various autobiographical narratives that span her publishing career. Sebbar, whose mother is French and whose father is Arab, does not speak Arabic and received a Eurocentric upbringing in colonial Algeria. I analyze how a recurrent syntactic similarity and periphrasis across several texts' titles intertwi…
