    Open Access•Ralph Dietl, Ralph L Dietl•ARTICLE•Journal of American History•2022

This elegant volume, based on six case studies, examines flagrant disobedience by American diplomats. In all these cases, the diplomats' views prevailed over the instructions of their superiors. • Suez 1956

    Open Access•Ralph Dietl•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary History•2008•Cited by: 5

This article does not analyse events in the Middle East. It is concerned with the structural background of the Suez Crisis. This article focuses on inter-allied conflict during the Suez Crisis. The crisis year 1956 witnessed a European challenge to the bipo…

However, the discord among NATO members rarely threatened the very existence of the Alliance. The late 1950s and early 1960s witnessed such a rare occurrence. In Europe the question of nuclear sharing triggered the development of blue-prints for a step-by-step replacement of the Atlantic security co-operation by a European Secur…

    Ralph Dietl•ARTICLE•Cold War History•2002•Cited by: 2

The joint declaration issued at the British-French Summit at St. Malo envisaged a common defence policy within the framework of the Common Foreign and Security Policy of the European Union. Previous attempts by France and Britain to form a 'CSDP' were victims to security needs of the Cold War. By 1950 a transatlantic security architecture seemed indispensable to safeguard Western Europe from the fate of South Korea. However, the so-called first d…
