Genre literacy transfer from the business to the social entrepreneurial pitch: A proposal for macrostructure and rhetorical strategies
The generic characteristics of the entrepreneurial pitch (i.e., a short persuasive oral presentation to garner funding from investors) have been the focus of considerable interest in business communication studies for some decades now. Its condensed persuasive nature makes this genre a prototype for studying effective communication skills to move an audience. This paper shares insights gathered from a pedagogical experience in which university st…
Use and Function of Gestures in Persuasive Business Communication: A Contrastive Study between Spanish and English
This study sheds light on the types and frequencies of kinesic signs used in business pitches by entrepreneurs in Spanish and English, as well as the functions these nonverbal signs fulfil to contribute to the persuasiveness of their presentations. The corpus consists of 20 pitches (10 in each language) from two equivalent TV programs (the reality shows Dragons' Den and Tu Oportunidad from the UK and Spain, respectively). A specific method of ana…
Construction and negotiation of voter-friendly identities in electoral debates
In this article we examine the identity construction of two politicians in the 2011 Spanish pre-electoral debate, following four of Bucholtz & Hall’s (2005) linguistic means: evaluation, implicatures, interactional negotiation, and complementary identity relations. For the analysis, Martin & White’s (2005) evaluation model and Corpus Linguistics are adopted. The Socialist candidate’s positive identity positions him as a defendant of laymen’s inte…
Evaluation of Status as a Persuasive Tool in Spanish and American Pre-electoral Debates in Times of Crises
The evaluative function of language is explored from the point of view of the expression of “status,” or how the world is presented, and its persuasive potential in pre-electoral debates in the US and Spain. The types of statements used in two comparable corpora in Spanish and English are examined using Hunston’s model (2000; 2008) for the evaluation of “status”—the degree of alignment of a proposition and the world—to discover similarities and d…
Positive self-evaluation versus negative other-evaluation in the political genre of pre-election debates
The present study explores the language of evaluation in a sub-genre of political discourse, pre-electoral debates, and its potential persuasive function for gaining voters via a contraposition of positive self-evaluation and negative evaluation of the other candidate. A further aim of this research is to check whether the candidate’s ideology has a bearing on the entities that get evaluated. After a brief examination of the characteristics of th…
La cohesión en la retórica política americana: Los discursos "Gettysburg Address", "I have a dream" y el de la Investidura de Obama
The present study attempts to add to the existing body of literature on political rhetoric by analyzing in detail the cohesive devices used in three political texts - The Gettysburg Address, I have a dream and Obama’s Inaugural Address – and their potential persuasive function. We first carry out an analysis of cohesion in these three masterpieces of political writing, applying our own model based on the combination and adaptation of those found …
