Regional entrepreneurship and the structure of the banking market
This paper investigates whether local banking market structure affects regional entrepreneurship, measured by new firm formation. Considering provincial data over the period 2011–21 in Italy, we found that bank concentration and firm formation had an inverted ‘U’-shaped relationship. Lower levels of bank concentration fostered firm formation, but above a market share of about 58% for the largest banks, which is seen in the South and some peripher…
Reshoring and firm productivity
This paper investigates the impact of reshoring, defined as the relocation of previously offshored production activities back to the home country or to a neighbouring country, on the productivity of manufacturing firms. It uses data from the European Reshoring Monitor on European firms in the period 2014–18. Reshoring increased total factor productivity of small and medium-sized firms, but did not affect productivity of large firms. The positive …
Regional entrepreneurship and innovation: Historical roots and the impact on the growth of regions
Speed of spending and government decentralization: Evidence from Italy
This paper investigates whether government decentralization affects the duration of public projects in Italy. Considering a large sample of 415,378 projects managed by different levels of government and co-funded by European funds within the 2007–13 programming period, we found strong differences between areas. In the South and in some Central regions, project duration was higher for the lowest level of government and lower at more centralized le…
Historical roots of regional entrepreneurship: The role of knowledge and creativity
Public R&D subsidies: Collaborative versus individual place-based programs for SMEs
This paper provides novel empirical evidence on the effectiveness of regional research and innovation policies for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). It investigated two subsidy programs implemented at the regional level in central Italy. One program targeted SMEs’ investments in individual research projects, and the other focused on collaborative research projects between SMEs and universities. Using a matched difference-in-differences a…
Turnout and voting behaviour in constitutional referendums: A regional analysis of the Italian case
This paper investigates regional disparities of both turnout and voting behaviour in constitutional referendums. The analysis is undertaken at the NUTS-3 level and it considers the three constitutional referendums held in Italy in the period 2001–2016. It finds that turnout was lower in provinces with higher unemployment rates and where citizens had a stronger affiliation to opposition parties. These factors, along with level of government popula…
