The investigative Case against the state Academy for the History of material culture (1936–1937)
Political repressions against the scientific staff of academic institutions in Leningrad led to the destruction of scientific schools and the reorganization of institutes. Significant changes in the institution-building process of Russian archaeology occurred largely due to the tragic events that took place in the State Academy for the History of Material Culture (GAIMK) in 1934–1936. Personnel changes, scandals and “squabbles” that began after t…

First Expedition of the Imperial Archeological Commission to the Zacaspian Area in the Structure of Their Scientific Activities
The Imperial Archaeological Commission (IAC) had a leading role in the state system of organizing and coordinating archaeological research throughout the Russian Empire during the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries, but its own research into Central Asia proved to be comparatively limited. The expedition of orientalist Professor Valentin Zhukovsky in 1890 may be considered the Commission’s main contribution to the study of the Trans…
When an Intellectual Becomes a Collaborationist
The article analyses the work “History of the German Army” by the French historian and public person Jacques Benoist-Méchin (1901-1983). Notorious for his active collaborationism during the Second World War, he was sentenced to death afterwards, but was pardoned by the French President Vincent Auriol. Therefore, that period of his life obscured his activity during the interwar period, which, however, presents a considerable interest. Being an act…

Immigrant Bilingualism in Spain
This study contributes to the ongoing debate about bilingual advantage and examines whether bilingual immigrant youths fare better, as well as, or worse academically than the matching group of monolinguals. Using data from Spain, where close to half of immigrants speak Spanish as their native language, we found no evidence of costs of bilingualism: bilingual youths did benefit from their linguistic skills. Their advantage, however, manifested its…
Negotiating Languages in Immigrant Families
This study is about the multifaceted nature of language use in immigrant families.
