Alkey Margulan is the outstanding scientist, the founder of the Kazakh school of archaeology and ethnography. In the 1920s — 1930s, he received an excellent education in Leningrad. About these years of his life is known not very much, although they were very important for his further scientific activities. In the Archive of the Institute for the History of Material Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences (St. Petersburg) there was possible to identify interesting materials related to the time of his postgraduate studies in the State Academy for the History of Material Culture in 1931—1934. This article introduces these documents into scientific circulation. In addition, unique photographs from Margulan's trip to Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan in 1932 are published here for the first time
