  • Leakage

    Open Access•J Olofsson•ARTICLE•Journal of Gender Studies•2023•References: 27

This article employs the concept of risk to explore potential synergies and points of contact between gender studies and discard studies. In doing so, the focus is on the risk of leakage, such as pollution, toxic discharges, urine leakage and menstruation. Leakage is of interest to scholars, both within gender studies and discard studies as it concerns the (female) body as well as pollutants seeping into the environment. Applying the concept of r…

  • Gender, space and sound

    Open Access•J Olofsson•ARTICLE•Ethnography•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 22

This article draws on an ethnographic fieldwork in which I investigated, and partook in practices of recycling graveside candles in the north of Slovenia. The aim is to show that the personnel's listening techniques helped sustain the gendered division of labour. While the listening techniques of my male informants seemed to increase their spatial mobility in that it allowed them to occupy a wider area, the auditory skills of the women who worked…

  • Situated inconveniences and short-term temporalities

    Open Access•J Olofsson•ARTICLE•Hau Journal of Ethnographic Theory•2021

This article investigates people’s experiences of residing close to a municipal waste facility site. Its focus is on perceived dilemmas, including odors, noises, loose garbage, and stray animals, but also on how these dilemmas were overshadowed by other factors or largely framed to concern what I will refer to as situated inconveniences. The findings show that the participants’ framing of their perceived dilemmas as situated inconveniences did al…

  • It is all about getting the volumes down’. Organizational framings of risk in relation to waste, waste management and temporality

    Open Access•J Olofsson•ARTICLE•Journal of Risk Research•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 11

Drawing on an ethnographic fieldwork at a waste facility site in the northern parts of Sweden, this article investigates organizational framings of risk (Hutter and Power 2005) in relation to waste and practices of waste management, employing the concept of temporality. The suggestion is that organizational framings of risk, as it contributes to steering the risk perception of the employees, also cater to a particular temporal register. In relati…

  • Gender, class and altered soundscapes

    Open Access•J Olofsson•ARTICLE•Ethnography•2018•Cited by: 3•References: 15

This paper explores some of the ways in which gender and class emerge in relation to the altered soundscape that follows technological change. As such, it takes seriously not only practices of noisemaking and disruptive sounds, but also the implication of silence and different modes of listening. The findings call for an enhanced understanding of the ephemeral qualities of sound, as well as the subsequent listening practices, and how these factor…

  • Om fluiditet, läckage och kvinnors kroppar

    Open Access•J Olofsson•ARTICLE•Tidskrift för genusvetenskap•2016

Informed by previous works within gender studies, postmaterialist studies and environmental humanities, this article explores the connections – and potential reciprocities – between the term fluidity and the term leakage. Both terms can be said to depict movements of liquids, but whereas fluidity translates to the ability to flow and the state of being fluid leakage translates to (unwanted and/or accidental) loss and to exude, spill and secrete. …

  • Becoming-a-firefighter - on the intra-active relationship between firefighters and their tools

    Katherine Harrison, J Olofsson•ARTICLE•NORMA•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 13

This article focuses on the relationship between the members of a local fire brigade in Sweden and their tools, as well as the organisational dynamics that forge this relation. Drawing on the work of Karen Barad [2007. Meeting the universe halfway. Quantum physics and the entanglement of matter and meaning. Durham: Duke University Press], and particularly her notion of intra-action, the intention is to unpick the strong material and symbolic rela…

  • Zombies ahead!’ A study of how hacked digital road signs destabilize the physical space of roadways

    Open Access•J Olofsson•ARTICLE•Visual Communication•2014•References: 7

This article explores some of the ways in which hacked Changeable Message Signs (CMSs) destabilize the physical space of motor transport spaces and jeopardize the institutionalized function of travel. While CMSs draw attention to the correlation between motorists’ current positions, possible inconveniences ahead and their final destination, hacked CMSs and the subsequent projection of unsanctioned messages destabilize this correlation. Hence, the…

  • “Om du är rädd kan du få sitta bredvid mig /…/ och hålla /… / handen.”

    Open Access•J Olofsson•ARTICLE•Tidskrift för genusvetenskap•2012

Dissecting the iconic image of the male fire fighter this article offers an understanding of how masculine enactments and homosocial rituals within the Swedish fire service rest upon practices of care and infantilization. In doing so, it draws on an ethnographic fieldwork that was carried out during the year of 2011 in Bodö, a small town in northern Sweden. Previous research has shown that practices of care, although traditionally coded female, a…

  • Revisiting the TV Object

    Open Access•J Olofsson•ARTICLE•Television & New Media•2012•References: 3

This article explores the site-specific location and objecthood of the Swedish television during its inception. It offers an understanding not only of how people in Sweden experienced the arrival of the television but also of the ways in which its material properties fashioned peoples’ use of space and how this worked in tandem with social stratifications, national discourses, and gendered ideals. Engaging in the historical and material actuality…

  • Mass Movements in Computer-Mediated Environments

    J Olofsson, Jennie Kristina Olofsson•ARTICLE•Information Communication & Society•2010

Human crowds and embodied densities assume important parts in everyday life. In as much as we constitute different formations – demonstrations, traffic jams and concerts – cinematic productions, computer games and other virtual settings invite us to observe mass movements. Unfortunately, the spatial implication of crowds has not been subjected to contemporary academic research. Critical accounts of digitalization techniques and computer-mediated …

  • A Momentary Lapse of Identity and Control

    Open Access•J Olofsson•ARTICLE•The Journal of Men s Studies•2009•References: 6

This article examines the tragic accidents that occurred in Montana and in Colorado where a total of 27 fire fighters lost their lives. While the encompassing interest concerns men operating in male dominated working sites and how homosociality is contingent on artifactual utility, the article specifically discloses the organizational dynamics found among the perished fire fighters and the homosocial practices that may have contributed to the tra…

  • Man måste lära sig reglerna för att kunna bryta mot dem

    Open Access•J Olofsson•ARTICLE•Kulturella Perspektiv – Svensk…•2006

This article focuses on artifacts and how they can be used to legitimate social positions and maintain hegemonic discourses. For about two months I was practicing in a garage outside Umeå and here I studied the use of artifacts and how these materialities worked as an expression for power. Using things for other purposes that they were meant for, and hereby changing their significance, shows how power is operating, and paradoxically that action c…
