  • The Evidence for Intentional Geometry and Astronomy at the Newark Earthworks

Ray Hively, Robert Horn•ARTICLE•Journal of Skyscape Archaeology•2026

Research over the last four decades has revealed evidence for geometrical and astronomical knowledge expressed with unprecedented accuracy and scale at the Hopewell Newark Earthworks. This article presents new data and analysis which directly address many questions about astronomical intention at Newark. The analysis documents the connections between the intentional geometrical, architectural plan of the site and lunar standstill alignments. The …

  • More Topography, Astronomy, and Geometry at the Newark Earthworks

    Ray Hively, Robert Horn•ARTICLE•Midcontinental Journal of…•2023•References: 16

New geometrical, photographic, topographic, and astronomical evidence is presented that links the architectural plan of the earthworks to the lunar standstills, solstices, and local terrain. The data are integrated with previous research to form a comprehensive interpretation of the site. Analysis shows that all eight sides of the Octagon can be used for observations of the 18.6-year lunar standstill cycle. The locations of obliterated earthwork …

  • A New and Extended Case for Lunar (and Solar) Astronomy at the Newark Earthworks

    Ray Hively, Robert Horn•ARTICLE•Midcontinental Journal of…•2013•Cited by: 7•References: 4

The Middle Woodland period Newark Earthworks in Newark, Ohio, are the largest known set of connected, geometrical earthworks ever constructed. An analysis of available evidence (survey, topographical, statistical, and archaeological) shows that the geometry of this Hopewell complex and its relation to the surrounding terrain can be understood in terms of astronomical alignments to the Sun and Moon. The geometrical structure of the site is consist…

  • Hopewell Cosmography at Newark and Chillicothe, Ohio

Ray Hively, Robert Horn•CHAPTER•Hopewell settlement patterns,…•2010

  • A Statistical Study of Lunar Alignments at the Newark Earthworks

    Ray Hively, Robert Horn•ARTICLE•Midcontinental Journal of…•2006•Cited by: 8•References: 4

Previous work has presented evidence that the Circle-Octagon Earthworks at Newark Ohio contain numerous features that are aligned to the lunar standstills (extreme rise and set points of the Moon). A Monte Carlo study of randomly constructed octagons is presented to investigate the statistical significance of this evidence. The study investigates the sensitivity of the statistics to a variety of plausible assumptions about the design of the earth…

  • Archaeoastronomy in the Americas
