  • The `chaîne opératoire' approach to lithic analysis

    Open Access•Roger V Grace, Roger Grace•ARTICLE•Internet Archaeology•1997•Cited by: 2•References: 3

Chaîne opératoire, translated as operational sequence, has been described as 'the different stages of tool production from the acquisition of raw material to the final abandonment of the desired and/or used objects. By reconstructing the operational sequence we reveal the choices made by ... humans.' (Bar-Yosef et al. 1992, 511). Excepting that the individuals in a group have a number of raw materials and techniques available to them; 'identifica…

  • Excavations of a Mesolithic Site at Thatcham, Berkshire

    Open Access•Frances Healy, Matthew M Heaton et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Prehistoric…•1992•Cited by: 14•References: 3

Excavations were undertaken in advance of construction work at Newbury Sewage Treatment Works on the outskirts of Thatcham in Berkshire, close to the sites of previous excavations undertaken by Wymer and by Peake and Crawford. Worked flint of Mesolithic date was recovered from a sandy layer overlying river gravel in two distinct concentrations suggesting two distinct episodes. Use wear analysis of the flint suggests that the sites were used as ho…

  • An investigation of the fractal properties of flint microwear images

    Open Access•D Rees, G G Wilkinson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•1991•Cited by: 13•References: 2

  • Microwear methodology: A reply to Moss, Hurcombe and bamforth

    Open Access•M H Newcomer, Mark Newcomer et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•1988•Cited by: 5•References: 8

  • Investigating microwear polishes with blind tests

    Open Access•Mark Newcomer, R Grace et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•1986•Cited by: 41•References: 6

  • The quantification of microwear polishes

    R Grace, Roger V Grace et al.•ARTICLE•World Archaeology•1985•Cited by: 54•References: 2

In the existing methodology of microwear analysis, both the descriptions and the comparisons of observed traces are highly subjective, which is unsatisfactory from many points of view. The authors describe various image processing techniques and discuss their potential to alleviate this situation by providing a means of quantifying microwear polishes and hence of comparing them objectively. Promising results have been obtained, although some tech…
