  • God Does Not Work in Us Without Us

    Open Access•Knut Alfsvåg•ARTICLE•Open Theology•2023

Roman-Catholic scholars tend to interpret Luther’s emphasis on the exteriority of salvation as a critique of the goodness of creation. Through an analysis of De servo arbitrio, this article shows this to be wrong. While emphasizing the unconditionality of God’s work in both creation and salvation, Luther still insists that humans are created in God’s image as his co-operators, thus repeating the divine lordship over creation. This is further emph…

  • Luther on Necessity

    Open Access•Knut Alfsvåg•ARTICLE•Harvard Theological Review•2015

Among the quotations from Luther's works condemned by the pope in 1520 was the statement that free will is something that exists in name only. In his defense of this statement in Assertio omnium articulorum , published in December 1520, Luther goes one step further. Here he not only declares “free will” to be a concept without factual reference, he even insists that there is no one in the position even to think on one's own, either good or bad, a…

  • Postmodern Epistemology and the Mission of the Church

    Knut Alfsvåg•ARTICLE•Mission Studies•2011

A Christian missionary has traditionally been understood as one who stands for and represents truth. Is this a claim that can be defended within the context of postmodern epistemology? According to Derrida, there is an irreducible difference between sign and signified; all historical religions are therefore limited to the realm of the contingent and the deconstructible. Caputo develops this idea further in his understanding of the endlessly trans…

  • God's fellow workers

    Knut Alfsvåg•ARTICLE•Studia Theologica - Nordic…•2008

The question whether the concept of cooperation is a relevant description of the relation between the human and the divine is here investigated through an interpretation of some key texts by Maximus Confessor and Martin Luther. Maximus consistently maintains the theocentricity of restored humanity, emphasizing that it is manifested by humans relinquishing what is incompatible with the divine. In a similar way Luther explores the notion of the Chr…

Knut Alfsvåg, Th D Knut Alfsvåg•ARTICLE•Neue Zeitschrift für Systematische…•2005

Alasdair MacIntyre criticises the ethics of modernity as fallacious, and wants it replaced by Aristotelian virtue ethics. He is particularly critical concerning modernity’s non-contextual understanding of reason, and wants to renew the ethical significance of concepts like tradition and context. According to MacIntyre, the modern secularization of ethics starts with the understanding of original sin in the Lutheran Reformation and its destruction…
