  • Walking in the Woods

    Open Access•Annette Arlander•ARTICLE•Global Performance Studies•2025

As an attempt at ‘performing landscape’ by moving through it, I have made some experiments with walking, using a small action camera on my forehead, in contrast to my usual practice of performing for a static camera on tripod. In this video essay I will demonstrate with brief video clips and a voice-over narration the development of a practice, where I insert a walk in one direction into a walk in the other direction. Reflecting on such walking a…

  • Liikkuvaa ja lähes liikkumatonta kuvaa mäntyjen kanssa

    Open Access•Annette Arlander•ARTICLE•Lähikuva – audiovisuaalisen…•2025

  • The Work of Sharing

Open Access•Annette Arlander, Bruce Barton et al.•ARTICLE•Performance Philosophy•2024

This multimedia essay is describing or rather demonstrating one attempt at dealing with the problem how to discuss performance in the mode of performance, based on the presentation at the Performance Philosophy conference in Helsinki in June 2022. There we—four members of the Artistic Research Working Group (ARWG) of Performance Studies international (PSi)—tried to present and demonstrate in a miniature form one of the methods for sharing we have…

  • Letters to a Pine

    Open Access•Annette Arlander•ARTICLE•Performance Matters•2023

Three letters to a small pine tree written as part of an online performance in October 2020 are compiled and edited into a video essay, with reflective and explanatory commentaries inserted after each letter. The video essay serves as an example of how PAR (performance as research) methodologies can “challenge the epistemological assumptions concerning the concept of research” and how they can “reinvigorate academic conventions” of presenting res…

  • Dear Olive Tree

    Open Access•Annette Arlander•ARTICLE•Journal of Embodied Research•2021

This video article consists of the video Dear Olive Tree (19 min) recorded in La Foia d’Ulldecona on 19 December 2019 with olive tree no. 968, three letters written to the tree and some reflections

  • Revisiting the Rock — Self-diffraction as a Strategy

    Open Access•Annette Arlander•ARTICLE•Global Performance Studies•2020

  • Diffraction, Mixture and Cut-Ups in Performing with Plants

    Annette Arlander•ARTICLE•Performance Research•2020

Inspired by Karen Barad’s understanding of diffraction as a methodology and experiments in moving across time and space with diffraction I will in this text experiment with diffraction as a method for performance. On the one hand I will understand diffraction as reading images and texts diffractively, through one another, and on the other hand I will link diffraction to the tradition of artistic cut-up developed by Burroughs and Grysin. Some vide…

  • Dune Dream – Self-imaging, Trans-corporeality and the Environment

    Open Access•Annette Arlander•ARTICLE•Body, Space & Technology•2018

In this text a small video, Dune Dream (2 min 39 sec), performed in 2014 in Maspalomas, and its material, Dune Dream (raw) , are related to discussions of some previous works created in the same place ( Sitting in Sand 2008), where the strategies of stillness versus movement and merging with or standing out from the landscape were compared. Here the video is looked at through the notions self-imaging (Jones 2006) and trans-corporeality (Alaimo 20…

  • The Shore Revisited

    Open Access•Annette Arlander•ARTICLE•Journal of Embodied Research•2018•Cited by: 1

This video article is based on a recorded return, in 2018, to the site of a performance for camera repeated weekly on Harakka Island in Helsinki during the year of the goat (2003–2004) as well as for a day and night during Easter that year. The video installations made fourteen years earlier are inserted in miniature format within the recent recording, complemented by journal entries from the day and night. The voice-over text discusses concerns …

  • Performing Landscape – Swinging Together or Playing with Projections

    Open Access•Annette Arlander•ARTICLE•Body, Space & Technology•2017

Swinging together is an experiment that involves performing with the projection of an image on the site of its making, including the image of others moving in the same swing at the same site. This text describes these initial experiments with participatory live events of swinging and with moving image projections on vegetation in Helsinki in 2014-2015. The experience of performing is reflected upon with the help of notions like haptic visuality (…

  • The Steaming Earth

    Open Access•Annette Kristina Arlander, Annette Arlander•ARTICLE•ARJ – Art Research Journal /…•2016•References: 1

The text presents the method developed by the author, called performing landscape, and discusses it in the context of the expanded field in performing arts. If we consider ourselves as earthlings, citizens of the planet earth, the question of meaningful performance practices can be approached inclusively. As citizens we are in relation to a city or society, as a site, too; as earthlings we are related to all beings living here, and to the earth. …
