  • Reviving traditional agricultural industries

Open Access•Rose-Ann Smith, Sarah Fay Buckland•ARTICLE•Singapore Journal of Tropical…•2025•References: 1

Recent growth in the arrowroot industry, driven by increased demand for gluten‐free products, presents an opportunity for historical leaders, such as St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Once acclaimed as the Caribbean region's premiere arrowroot producer, SVG's production declined due to economic stresses and weak institutional support. Recent exposure to climate extremes, such as Hurricane Beryl of 2024, underscores the need for a thorough assessmen…

  • Exploring the utility of the Enhanced Vegetation Index as rainfall and agricultural proxy in a Caribbean case study event

    Open Access•Sarah Fay Buckland•ARTICLE•Singapore Journal of Tropical…•2024

Highly fragile small island states experience disproportionate climate impacts given their limited capacity to implement cost‐effective tools for detecting emerging signals of drying conditions and monitoring systems for sensitive sectors such as agriculture, especially for uncertain, ‘creeping’ events such as droughts. Despite the existence of open‐source Google Earth Engine datasets, untapped potential remains for their full deployment in disas…

  • Agro‐climate services and drought risk management in Jamaica

Open Access•Sarah Fay Buckland, Donovan Campbell•ARTICLE•Singapore Journal of Tropical…•2022

For many generations, Caribbean smallholder farmers have used traditional knowledge to manage drought impacts. However, patterns of increased climate variability increasingly challenge traditional drought management practices, creating livelihood insecurities and uncertainties. Climate Information Services (CIS) have been promoted as an agile risk management strategy to help farmers negotiate challenges of increased climate extremes. Yet, despite…

  • Consumer involvement in health care purchasing

Open Access•Carol Lupton, Sarah Buckland et al.•ARTICLE•Health & Social Care in the…•2007•Cited by: 2•References: 10

Recent reforms in the National Health Service (NHS) place great emphasis on the importance of the ‘voice of the consumer’ in the provision of health care. Health purchasers are now required to adopt the role of ‘champion of the people’, traditionally that of the Community Health Councils (CHCs). In turn the CHCs have been encouraged to become more closely involved in the purchasing process. This paper draws on a national investigation of the oper…

  • Expert Systems and the Public Provision of Welfare Benefit Advice

Patrick Dawson, Sarah Buckland et al.•ARTICLE•Policy & Politics•1990•Cited by: 1

At some stage during their lives most people will need information on welfare benefit entitlements and on the operation of the social security system in order to lodge a benefit claim. This article reports on the feasibility of using computers to provide benefit advice and support to the public, drawing on data from a study of potential users of a computer information system. The article concludes that expert systems technology could provide oppo…

  • Household Claiming Behaviour

Open Access•Sarah Buckland, Sarah Fay Buckland et al.•ARTICLE•Social Policy and Administration•1989•Cited by: 3•References: 3

Social security benefits provide an essential resource for most families on low incomes. This paper examines the life cycle of claiming activities, from the initial decision to claim through to routine claiming. New empirical evidence is drawn from a study of relatively low income households in South East England carried out by the Alvey DHSS Demonstrator Project. A number of analytical stages which comprise the “claiming process” are identified …
