Agony in the news media: Framing the dying body in euthanasia news coverage from Portugal and the United Kingdom (2016–2024)
Some studies suggest that the news media coverage of euthanasia frames the dying body as a horrible, untreatable, and intolerable bodily state. This study analyses the framing of the dying body, its organic dysfunction, and the profiles of terminal and end of life people in the euthanasia debate in Portugal and the United Kingdom. The sample includes 72 stories containing references to organ dysfunctions caused by terminal and end of life illness…
Stop Giving Us the Negatives of the Other Side’s Aims”: The EU Referendum Through Letters to the Editor
The referendum on Britain’s membership of the EU gave citizens the final say on one of the most controversial political issues in modern Britain, crossing social classes, traditional political cleavages, and political parties. In an attempt to examine how the public made sense of Brexit and its potential consequences, we analyse all letters to the editor discussing Brexit or the campaign published in British daily national newspapers in the two m…
British Public Service Broadcasting, the EU and Brexit
This paper analyses the historic role of Britain's major public service broadcaster, the BBC, in reporting the European Union. To do this it combines a content analysis of two datasets of BBC broadcast and online coverage from 2007 and 2012 with a series of semi-structured interviews conducted with former and current senior BBC editors and journalists. The research finds that BBC coverage in the pre-referendum period was closely tied to major eve…

Rethinking balance and impartiality in journalism? How the BBC attempted and failed to change the paradigm
This article reconsiders the concepts of balance and impartiality in journalism, in the context of a quantitative content analysis of sourcing patterns in BBC news programming on radio, television and online in 2007 and 2012. Impartiality is the cornerstone of principles of public service broadcasting at the BBC and other broadcasters modelled on it. However, the article suggests that in the case of the BBC, it is principally put into practice th…

The Discursive Construction of Women Politicians in the European Press
The appointment of the first majority female government in Spain generated a significant amount of coverage in newspapers across Europe, synthesising the multi-faceted debate about the relationship between gender and political leadership. Through the combination of qualitative thematic and quantitative content analysis, this article examines the construction of women politicians across different European nations. By analysing the coverage of the …
The Journalistic Construction of Voters in the Spanish General Election Campaign 2008
This article examines the mediated construction of citizens during an electoral campaign, a political period in which citizens are normatively expected to play a fundamental role. From a social constructionist, discursive approach, this article qualitatively explores the representation of citizens in the press in the coverage of the main Spanish newspapers (El País, El Mundo, and Abc) during the campaign for the Spanish General Election of 2008. …
A Partial Europe Without Citizens or Eu-Level Political Institutions: How far can Euronews contribute to a European public sphere
Euronews is a multilingual television news channel broadcast in eight languages with a remit to cover news and current affairs from a “European perspective”. Launched in 1993, the channel was set up to unite linguistic and cultural differences amongst European citizens and help towards shaping a more inclusive European identity. This article asks—17 years since it began life—in what ways does Euronews reflect European perspectives? Drawing on a c…
The discursive construction of democracy in the Spanish press
Most research on communication and democracy has either focused on how the media shape or influence the way democratic politics is practised, or on what the democratic role of media should be, and is based on the (normative) assumption that the media play a crucial role in contemporary politics. These works implicitly assume that there is a consensus about what a democracy is, about how democracies should work, and about the role the media should…
