Most research on communication and democracy has either focused on how the media shape or influence the way democratic politics is practised, or on what the democratic role of media should be, and is based on the (normative) assumption that the media play a crucial role in contemporary politics. These works implicitly assume that there is a consensus about what a democracy is, about how democracies should work, and about the role the media should play in democratic politics. However, ‘democracy ’ and ‘democratic practices’ are highly contested notions, both in theory and in practice. While different works have focused on what different (normative) conceptions of democracy require from the media (Curran, 1991; Scammell, 2000; Strömbäck, 2005), less attention has been paid to the conception(s) of democracy commonly spread by the media and to the media’s conception(s) of how democracy should be and work. Although a consensus exists with regard to the desirability of democracy as a political system, a similar agreement on the ambiguity of democracy as a concept can be found (Dahl, 1989; Held, 2006; Sartori, 1987). However, democracy is not only (re)defined in the field of political theory. From a social constructionist point of view, the democratic political system is in con-stant redefinition in everyday practices. The media play a crucial role in this process: ‘as media constantly provide us with definitions of ... democracy, participation and representation, normalizing some definitions and discredit-ing others ’ (Cammaerts and Carpentier, 2007: xiii)
