Shaping Participatory Publics
This article connects the sociology of public problems with the categorisation of participatory publics proposed by Hasebrink et al. Building on our work on depopulation in Spain, we propose to analyse the conversation on Twitter/X between 2019 and 2023 to create a proof of concept of its typology: polity publics, topic publics, and group publics, which tend to intersect and form hybrid publics. This article aims to operationalise the concept of …
Connecting publics in latency through communicative practices
This article examines how participatory publics persist in depopulated rural areas during periods of low visibility and mobilization. Drawing on pragmatism and mediatization theory, we analyse communicative figurations in Castilla-La Mancha (Spain) using survey data ( N = 529) and develop a Participatory Public Connection Index. Regression models reveal that public connection is driven more by communicative and territorial factors – such as local…
Media ensembles in depopulating municipalities and news deserts
This study analyzes the role of media ensembles in municipalities at risk of depopulation in Castilla-La Mancha, Spain, exploring their function as communicative resilience resources in areas classified as news deserts. It seeks to move beyond the traditional focus on the absence of conventional media by adopting a processual perspective that acknowledges the interaction among various communication channels and practices at the local level. A qua…
Local Media, Rural Depopulation, and Territorial Attachment
This article explores the relationship between local media ecosystems and territorial hope in depopulated rural areas of Castilla-La Mancha (Spain). Drawing on geographies of hope as a travelling concept, we examine how local media shape affective orientations toward the future. Within the framework of rural mediatization, we conceptualize media ensembles as key drivers in the symbolic construction of place and as potential enablers of hope in te…
From news deserts to news resilience
This article delves into the established concept of news deserts within the broader field of Communication Geography, aiming to propose a comprehensive methodological framework for exploring the absence of local media. This approach considers crucial variables including geography, demography, public services, and infrastructure, all contributing to the configuration of the media landscape. By focusing on the depopulated region of Castile-La Manch…
New Strategies for Old Dilemmas
The current global media scenario, dominated by private transnational conglomerates that operate in a multiplatform context, brings the debate on the future of public service media (PSM) back to the fore. These operators are facing a redefinition of their operational strategy, not only in their linear broadcasting but also in the online space. Through in-depth interviews with the digitization managers, this article studied the case of Spanish reg…
Evolution of the public problem of depopulation in Spain
According to the sociology of public problems, the construction, visibility, and stabilization of a public problem require the mobilization of collectives of citizens interested in the issue, which act as an active entity in demanding actions and policies. One such issue is the depopulation of rural areas in Spain, which has shifted from a geographically localized problem to a matter of state policy. This article investigates the influence of fra…
European policy proposals to meet the challenge of public service media
Public controversies are an analytical opportunity to study the emergence of issues, the creation and alliance of actors, as well as the articulation of public arenas (politics, society, activism, academia, etc.). This paper analyzes how two actors in Spanish academia emerged, and how they became an expression of the polarized conflict on prostitution, sex work, and sex trafficking. Through a case study, this work traces the emergence and consoli…
The disappearance of provincial printed press
The current context and changes in the communicational paradigm in the last ten years lead to think we are experiencing a moment of transition that entails the end of mass media, like different studies have concluded. Among them, the most vulnerable product is the printed newspaper, which disappearance generates few doubts. However, immersed in this moment of change, we cannot yet evaluate what means to lose a journalistic model that has prevaile…
The economic contribution of public funds to the mass media takes place in two directions: direct subsidies and institutional advertising campaigns. The purpose of this article is to review the indicators that the Spanish autonomous governments take into account when granting public aid and buying advertising space in the media. When this support is often claimed by the profession, it is worth asking if values such as quality of information and s…
El periodista como agente social
In recent years there has been a debate about the emerging professional profiles and skills required in journalism. However, it sometimes goes unnoticed that the basic function of mediation between the facts and the readers in journalism is still valid, although it must be adapted to rapid technological advances and sociocultural changes. We explore how the vocation of service and the coordinating role of journalism for certain communities requir…
