  • Extending the record of abrupt and millennial-scale climate and ocean change through the Mid-Pleistocene transition in Santa Barbara basin, California

    Open Access•Richard J Behl, Sara Afshar et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2013

  • Geochemical evidence for changes in surface-water productivity and bottom-water redox conditions during glacial-interglacial transitions in the Santa Barbara Basin

    Open Access•Walter E Dean•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2013

  • From the Knowability Paradox to the existence of proofs

    Open Access•W Dean, Walter E Dean et al.•ARTICLE•Synthese•2010•Cited by: 1•References: 45

  • Geochemical evidence for hydroclimatic variability over the last 2460 years from Crevice Lake in Yellowstone National Park, USA

    Open Access•Lora R Stevens, Walter E Dean•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2008

  • A late Quaternary record of eolian silt deposition in a maar lake, St. Michael Island, western Alaska

    Open Access•Daniel R Muhs, Thomas A Ager et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2003

Recent stratigraphic studies in central Alaska have yielded the unexpected finding that there is little evidence for full-glacial (late Wisconsin) loess deposition. Because the loess record of western Alaska is poorly exposed and not well known, we analyzed a core from Zagoskin Lake, a maar lake on St. Michael Island, to determine if a full-glacial eolian record could be found in that region. Particle size and geochemical data indicate that the m…

  • Holocene environmental and climatic change in the Northern Great Plains as recorded in the geochemistry of sediments in Pickerel Lake, South Dakota

    Open Access•Walter E Dean, Antje Schwalb•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2000

  • Regional aridity in North America during the middle Holocene

    Open Access•Walter E Dean, Thomas S Ahlbrandt et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1996•Cited by: 7•References: 4

Increased aridity throughout the Great Plains and Rocky Mountain region during the middle Holo cene has been documented from pollen records, aeolian proxy variables in lake cores, and active sand dune migration. Varve calibration provided by a continuously varved record of the Holocene from a core from Elk Lake, northwestern Minnesota, shows that the influx of aeolian clastic material increased beginning about 8 ka and ended about 3.8 ka, with pe…

  • A Climate-Related Oxidizing Event in Deep-Sea Sediment from the Bering Sea

    Open Access•James V Gardner, Walter E Dean et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1982

Many cores from the deep basins of the Bering Sea have a thin oxidized zone within otherwise reduced sediment. This oxidized zone began to form about 6000 yr ago and represents an interval of about 3200 yr. Mineralogically, the oxidized and reduced sediments are similar, but chemically they differ. Concentrations of Fe and C are lower, and concentrations of Mn, Ba, Co, Mo, and Ni are higher in the oxidized than in the reduced sediment. Mn is enri…
