Qatar vs. Germany: An analysis of Qatari reactions to western discursive othering during the 2022 Fifa World Cup
Massive sports events always attract international attention. However, for attention-seeking countries, this is a double-edged sword because it is difficult to remain in control of the images produced by foreign media outlets. Since Qatar is eager to boost its image internationally, hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup was supposed to be a major step in the country’s comprehensive strategy to achieve this. However, Qatar faced strong criticism from we…
Media representations of Islam in Germany. A comparative content analysis of German newspapers over time
Against the background of persistent Islamophobia in German society, we investigate the role of the media in reproducing problematic images of Islam. This paper presents and discusses the findings of a quantitative and over-time comparative study of Islam coverage in eight German newspapers in 2014, 2019, and 2021. The results demonstrate how Muslims and Islam continue to be represented and contextualized in conflictual settings. In fact, 37% of …
Local media in transitional fragile states: The cases of Iraq and Libya
Local media that cater to their local communities are still rare in Arab countries due to government control and centralization of media production. In some transitional states, however, we observe a mushrooming of new local small media initiatives after regulation modes have changed. Yet, these media operate in often fragile states in which a sustainable development of autonomous media is difficult to achieve. In this study, we investigate how l…
Arab Media Systems
This volume provides a comparative analysis of media systems in the Arab world, based on criteria informed by the historical, political, social, and economic factors influencing a country’s media. Reaching beyond classical western media system typologies, 'Arab Media Systems' brings together contributions from experts in the field of media in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) to provide valuable insights into the heterogeneity of this regio…
The virus of the ‘others’? Corona and discursive othering in Arab media
The spread of fear of the coronavirus and related insecurities around the pandemic have fuelled nationalist and increased exclusionary tendencies in countries all over the world. In North America, for instance, anti-Asian racism increased when former US President Donald Trump dubbed the virus the ‘Chinese virus’. A nationalist agenda has been strengthened in many places, including the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region; and hateful narrat…
Media pushing for political transformation: A comparative analysis of issue contestation in Poland before 1989 and Egypt before 2011
This article compares two cases of media reporting on the crucial contesting issue of brutality carried out by security forces that proved to be relevant for delegitimizing the regimes in both Poland in 1989 and Egypt in 2011. We show that, despite the different technological infrastructure available and the distinct institutionalization of the political and media systems, we can observe similar mechanisms of mass media communication unfolding ar…
Information seeking and communication during forced migration: An empirical analysis of refugees’ digital media use and its effects on their perceptions of Germany as their target country
There is a common perception that ‘every refugee carries a smartphone’, but research on this phenomenon is limited. We conducted a representative survey of 400 refugees to Germany which provides insight into their use of digital media in preparation for and during forced migration. We also asked whether digital media shaped images of and expectations about the refugees’ target country Germany. The data show that refugees are not a homogeneous gro…

International broadcasting and intercultural dialogue: Deutsche Welle in the Arab World
This article examines Deutsche Welle’s Arabic television programming to evaluate its goal of promoting intercultural dialogue. Framed around the concept of media-promoted intercultural dialogue, the paper presents the results of a comparative content analysis of Deutsche Welle and two pan-Arab satellite channels, al-Jazeera and al-Arabiya. Taking the results as a starting point, I propose suggestions for how to improve the performance of governme…
The image of Islam in German public service television programmes
The image of Islam among western publics seems to be distorted. In particular, the media are held responsible for shaping this image. Following the agenda-setting approach, it is assumed that the media largely determine what audiences should think about, specifically in relation to issues which people do not have a strong personal reference to. For German audiences, Islam is such an issue. Therefore, this analysis examines non-fictional formats s…
