The image of Islam among western publics seems to be distorted. In particular, the media are held responsible for shaping this image. Following the agenda-setting approach, it is assumed that the media largely determine what audiences should think about, specifically in relation to issues which people do not have a strong personal reference to. For German audiences, Islam is such an issue. Therefore, this analysis examines non-fictional formats such as magazines, talk shows, documentaries and reportages in German public service television in order to disclose the thematic structure of these formats with regard to their representation of Islam. These programmes in particular are meant to be a basis for political information and for shaping public opinion. It was examined in which thematic context Islam appeared in the period of 1 July 2005 to 31 December 2006 in the programmes of both German public service channels ARD and ZDF. The results show that Islam mainly occurs in connection with violence and conflict-driven issues, thus adding to a negative image of Islam und Muslims in Germany
