    Ullrich Langer, Paul-Alexis Mellet•ARTICLE•Réforme Humanisme Renaissance•2025

  • Pleasure as Unconstrained Movement in Renaissance Literary Aesthetics

    Ullrich Langer•ARTICLE•French Studies•2010

In this essay I show that the pleasure provided by the poem as an imaginary landscape, as evidenced in rhetorical theory (Quintilian's analysis of varietas in Virgil's Georgics ), and in exemplary poems by Du Bellay ('Romae descriptio') and Ronsard ('Elegie à Louis Des Masures'), can be identified as that of unconstrained movement. Aristotle's definition of pleasure as unimpeded activity of our natural faculties in the Nicomachean Ethics captures…

  • La Parole incertaine: Montaigne en dialogue

Philip Knee, Ullrich Langer•ARTICLE•Renaissance and Reformation•2008

  • French Sixteenth-Century Literary Studies in the United States Today

    Open Access•Ullrich Langer•ARTICLE•South Central Review•2000

Until recently American graduate programs in French divided the literary tradition into manageable morsels: Middle Ages, Sixteenth Century, Seventeenth Century, Eighteenth Century, Nineteenth Century, Twentieth Century, and Francophone Literature. The introduction of a Literary Theory component and of Cultural Studies changed that picture only to the extent that, since French Studies are not an expanding, but a contracting or at best stable area …

  • The Renaissance Novella as Justice

    Open Access•Ullrich Langer•ARTICLE•Renaissance Quarterly•1999•References: 2

This essay examines short narrative (the Decameron, the Heptameion, the histoire tragique, and Till Eulenspiegel) as reflections of different models of justice within the Aristotelian-Ciceronian tradition. The exchanges among characters, and the conclusion of these exchanges, are patterned in ways that provide justice without requiring the virtuousness of any one character. The link between short narrative and justice illuminates the more general…

  • Exemplum: The Rhetoric of Example in Early Modern France and Italy

    Ullrich Langer, John Lyons•REVIEW•Italica•1991

Examples, crucial links between discourse and society's view of reality, have until now been largely neglected in literary criticism. In the first book-length study of the rhetoric of example, John Lyons situates this figure by comparing it with more frequently studied tropes such as metaphor and synecdoche, discusses meanings of the terms example and exemplum, and proposes a set of descriptive concepts for the study of example in early modern li…

  • Hypothetical Necessity and Fiction in the Early Renaissance

    Ullrich Langer•ARTICLE•Modern Language Notes•1987

The figure of the poet and the role of the reader in Renaissance fiction have been the focus of much critical attention: Robert Durling's classic analysis of the poet in epic, and Terence Cave's recent studies of the reader and reading are two emblematic cases.1 The poet and the reader are roughly the two poles of the communicative situation, and the emergence of strong poet and reader figures are signs of the increased insistence on the process …
