  • Made in Europe – assessing the feasibility of reshoring active pharmaceutical ingredient production to Europe

Open Access•Verena Knoll, Caroline Steigenberger et al.•ARTICLE•Health Policy•2026

BACKGROUND: As global reliance on Asian production of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) grows, the relocation of API production to Europe (reshoring) has been discussed as a potential solution to decrease dependency on Asia and potentially prevent future medicine shortages. However, it is not yet well understood whether its implementation would be feasible, and under which conditions. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore expert and stakeh…

  • Actual Guidance Is Enough

    Open Access•Stefan Fischer•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethics and Social…•2023

In a recent article, Sharadin and van Someren Greve call into question an idea many philosophers take to be platitudinous, namely that deontic evaluation is capable of action guidance. In this critical note, I argue that their skeptical worries are unwarranted. The central problem in their argument, I claim, is a too unrestrained account of "actual guidance." According to this account, an agent's deontic evaluation of an action alternative that b…

  • The Indispensability Argument for the Doing/Allowing Asymmetry

    Open Access•Stefan Fischer•ARTICLE•The Journal of Value Inquiry•2023

In this paper, I propose a solution to a challenge formulated by Judith Jarvis Thomson: We have to explain why the moral asymmetry between doing and allowing harm is a deep feature of our moral thinking. In a nutshell, my solution is this: It could not be otherwise. Accepting the asymmetry is indispensable for the construction and maintenance of stable moral communities. My argument centrally involves mental resource management. Moral communities…

  • Perspective Lost

    Open Access•Stefan Fischer•ARTICLE•dialectica•2022

In this paper, I criticize the most prevalent positive argument for ethical nonnaturalism, the argument from ethical phenomenology. According to it, nonnatural entities are part of the best explanation of the phenomenology of ethical deliberation; therefore, nonnaturalism is true. The argument blinds out the external, empirically informed perspective on ethical deliberation. I argue that doing so is methodologically unwarranted unless we already …

  • How to address medicines shortages

    Open Access•Sabine Vogler, Stefan Fischer•ARTICLE•Health Policy•2020

  • Influence of quality of intensive care on quality of life/return to work in survivors of the acute respiratory distress syndrome

Open Access•Christian Apfelbacher, Susanne Brandstetter et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2020

    Clinicaltrials.govNCT02637011. (December 22, 2015, retrospectively registered)

  • On Promoting the Dead Certain

    Open Access•Stefan Fischer•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethics and Social…•2017

According to Humean promotionalism about practical reasons, the fact that I have a reason to φ holds in virtue of the fact that φ-ing promotes one or more of my desires. The topic of this discussion note is the question of how best to understand the promotion relation. In particular, I defend a probabilistic understanding of promotion against a line of argument recently brought forth by Jeff Behrends, Joshua DiPaolo, and Nate Sharadin. Roughly, t…

  • Changes in Emotional Responses to Aversive Pictures Across Periods Rich in Slow-Wave Sleep Versus Rapid Eye Movement Sleep

Ullrich Wagner, Stefan Fischer et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2002

Objective Since Freud’s “Interpretation of Dreams,” sleep has been related to emotional functions, where dreams were assumed to play a cathartic role. In psychophysiological research, this role was attributed mainly to rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. The present study compared processing pictures with negative emotional impact over intervals covering either early sleep dominated by slow-wave sleep (SWS) or late REM sleep-dominated sleep. Method E…
