  • Place-related representations in setting the stage for empathy

    Open Access•Marius C Vollberg, Brendan O’Connor et al.•ARTICLE•Cognition•2026

What makes people experience varying degrees of empathy? Common accounts emphasize interpersonal attributes, including victims' group membership or social proximity to observers. Here we elucidate a distinct process: imagining the scenes surrounding victims. Although imagination has been shown to moderate empathy, the relative importance of its representational components is unknown. Using fMRI (N = 48), we identified activation maps preferential…

  • Variation across Regions and Demographics in African American Language Morphosyntax

Tessa Masis, Chloe Eggleston et al.•ARTICLE•American Speech•2026

Social media data and computational tools have become increasingly powerful alternatives to traditional methods of data collection and annotation for sociolinguistic research. While not without their own drawbacks, these resources can help address critical problems faced by researchers, such as sparse data, the observer's paradox, and annotating corpora at scale. This article presents a Twitter dataset of 227 million conversational messages acros…

Open Access•A Bevan, Peter Northover et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Open Archaeology Data•2024

This archive lists ~8000 Bronze Age British axeheads, alongside associated compositional analyses, isotopic measurements and radiocarbon dates. It integrates several major existing data collection efforts and published catalogues, whilst also providing a self-consistent basic typology. It is archived as four related flat-sheet text files and could be reused to support quantitative assessment of geographic and temporal patterns in metalwork style,…

  • How white is the global elite? An analysis of race, gender and network structure

    Open Access•Kevin L Young, Seth K Goldman et al.•ARTICLE•Global Networks•2021•Cited by: 13•References: 88

Research on elites often utilizes network analysis to describe and analyse the interrelationships among elites and how their prominence varies by demographic characteristics. We examine the diversity of global elites through an analysis of the board members of large corporations, think tanks, international organizations, and transnational policy planning groups. Using new data, we provide the first descriptive picture of global elite networks in …

  • Environmental and economic impacts of solar‐powered integrated greenhouses

Open Access•Joseph Hollingsworth, Eshwar Ravishankar et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Industrial Ecology•2020

Greenhouse vegetable production plays a vital role in providing year‐round fresh vegetables to global markets, achieving higher yields, and using less water than open‐field systems, but at the expense of increased energy demand. This study examines the life cycle environmental and economic impacts of integrating semitransparent organic photovoltaics (OPVs) into greenhouse designs. We employ life cycle assessment to analyze six environmental impac…

  • Croig Cave

Steven Mithen, Karen Wicks et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Society of…•2013•Cited by: 2

Activity within caves provides an important element of the later prehistoric and historic settlement pattern of western Scotland. This contribution reports on a small-scale excavation within Croig Cave, on the coast of north-west Mull, that exposed a 1.95 m sequence of midden deposits and cave floors that date between c 1700 BC and AD 1400. Midden analysis indicated the processing of a diverse range of small fish and the collection of shellfish t…

  • Censorship and deletion practices in Chinese social media

    Open Access•David Bamman, Brendan O’Connor et al.•ARTICLE•First Monday•2012

With Twitter and Facebook blocked in China, the stream of information from Chinese domestic social media provides a case study of social media behavior under the influence of active censorship. While much work has looked at efforts to prevent access to information in China (including IP blocking of foreign Web sites or search engine filtering), we present here the first large–scale analysis of political content censorship in social media, i.e., t…

  • Late Bronze Age Pottery Production

Open Access•Joanne Best, Ann Woodward et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Prehistoric…•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 24

Excavations at Tinney's Lane, Sherborne in 2002 uncovered extensive evidence for Late Bronze Age settlement and pottery production, dating from a short time period probably within the 12th or 11th century cal bc . Well-preserved deposits of burnt stone, broken vessels, and burnt sherds, together with resulting debris redeposited in associated pits, were accompanied by a series of post-hole structures interpreted as round-houses and four-post sett…

  • From Tweets to Polls

    Open Access•Brendan O’Connor, Ramnath Balasubramanyan et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the International…•2010•Cited by: 123•References: 5

We connect measures of public opinion measured from polls with sentiment measured from text. We analyze several surveys on consumer confidence and political opinion over the 2008 to 2009 period, and find they correlate to sentiment word frequencies in contempora- neous Twitter messages. While our results vary across datasets, in several cases the correlations are as high as 80%, and capture important large-scale trends. The re- sults highlight th…

  • A group of bronze socketed axes from Eildon Mid Hill, near Melrose, Roxburghshire

Brendan O'Connor, Brendan O’Connor et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Society of…•1987

In 1982, a group of seven socketed axes was found on the lower western slopes of Eildon Mid Hill, Ettrick and Lauderdale District, Borders Region. Although recovered from redeposited soil, the axes probably represent a hoard of the Ewart Park phase of the late Bronze Age. The find reinforces what appears to be a significant local concentration of contemporary metalwork around the Eildon Hills
