  • Prenatal substance use during the Covid-19 pandemic in the United Kingdom

    Open Access•Swarali Datye, Eva M J Peters et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2026

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic was associated with high levels of depression and anxiety among pregnant individuals in the UK, as shown previously in the EPPOCH cohort. However, the relationships between these psychological burdens, pandemic-related stressors, and substance use in the prenatal period have not been systematically investigated. Methods: = 3,292; June-November 2020). Participants reported alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, and illicit…

  • Burden of RSV-Associated Inpatient Care and Emergency Service Utilization in Two German Pediatric Centers Across Six Seasons Including the First Nirsevimab Year

Open Access•Lisa Gürke, Gregor Hanslik et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2026

Background/Objectives: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a major cause of infant respiratory morbidity, yet real-world data on healthcare utilization following universal immunoprophylaxis remain limited. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed RSV-positive inpatient and emergency department (ED) encounters from two German tertiary pediatric centers across six seasons (2019/20-2024/25). Augsburg contributed inpatient data for 2022/23-2024/25, incl…

  • Diving into the Digital Landscape

Open Access•M Baumgartner, Michael Karl Baumgartner et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2024

Although information on jaundice is readily accessible online for non-medical individuals, there were notable differences in quality based on language and significant variability in the quality of information warranting attention from healthcare professionals. Furthermore, German websites providing information on jaundice were often hosted by commercial organizations. We propose that pediatric societies engage in developing and maintaining organi…

  • Application of Next-Generation Sequencing to Enterobacter Hormaechei Subspecies Analysis during a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Outbreak

Open Access•Patrick Morhart, Roman G Gerlach et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2023

Initially, it was believed that the NICU outbreak was caused by a single ECC clone due to the similarity in antibiotic resistance. However, our findings show that antibiotic susceptibility patterns can be misleading in investigating outbreaks of multi-drug-resistant ECC. In contrast, bacterial WGS accurately identified ECC at the clonal level, which significantly helped to delineate the nature of the observed outbreak
